Planning to get your learner's permit in Florida? If you're under 18, the state now requires you to complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before you can apply. This isn't the old 4-hour TLSAE course—Florida changed the law on August 1, 2025, and teens now need more comprehensive training.

Our Miami-based driving school offers the state-approved DETS course 100% online. You can complete it from your phone, tablet, or computer—wherever and whenever works for you. We're fully authorized by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), and your completion gets reported to the DMV automatically.

Enroll today for just $24.95 with no hidden fees. Start your path to a Florida learner's license right now.

What Is the DETS Course?

The Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course is Florida's new mandatory training program for first-time drivers between the ages of 14½ and 17. It replaced the TLSAE course for minors and provides deeper, more focused education on the unique challenges teen drivers face.

This 6-hour online program covers Florida traffic laws, defensive driving strategies, the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, and how to handle real-world road situations safely. The course includes videos, interactive lessons, and a final exam that tests your understanding of critical safety concepts.

Once you pass the final exam with at least 80%, we'll send your certificate of completion directly to the FLHSMV. You'll also get a copy via email so you can head to the DMV and take your Class E Knowledge Exam for your learner's permit.

Who Needs This Course?

The DETS course is required for specific groups of young drivers in Florida:

  • First-time drivers ages 14½ to 17: If you've never held a driver's license in Florida or anywhere else, you must complete the DETS course before applying for a learner's license.
  • Students seeking a learner's permit: Florida residents who are at least 14 and currently enrolled in school, or non-students who are at least 15, must complete DETS to qualify for a restricted license.
  • Teens switching from out of state: If you're moving to Florida from another state and you're under 18, you'll need to complete the DETS course even if you had driver training elsewhere.

Important: If you're 18 or older, you don't take the DETS course. Adults need the 4-hour TLSAE course instead.

What You'll Learn

The DETS curriculum is built specifically for teen drivers and covers the topics that matter most for staying safe on Florida roads:

Florida Traffic Laws and Driver Responsibilities

Understand the rules of the road, speed limits, right-of-way laws, and the legal responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel.

Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on Driving

See how alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications, and other substances impair judgment, reaction time, and motor skills. The course explains Florida's zero-tolerance laws for underage drinking and driving.

Defensive Driving Techniques

Learn how to anticipate dangerous situations, maintain safe following distances, and respond to aggressive or distracted drivers.

Night Driving and Weather Hazards

Driving at night or in heavy rain requires different strategies. You'll get practical advice on adjusting to reduced visibility, handling wet roads, and staying alert.

Sharing the Road Safely

Florida roads are busy with motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and large trucks. Learn how to share space safely and avoid common collision scenarios.

Avoiding Distractions

Texting, social media, passengers, and even eating can pull your attention away from driving. Learn how to stay focused.

Emergency Preparedness

Know what to do if your car breaks down, you're involved in a crash, or you encounter an emergency situation. Being prepared keeps everyone safer.

Each section includes engaging videos and interactive content. At the end, you'll take a final exam. You need 80% to pass, and Florida allows up to three attempts.

DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety): Required for all drivers under 18. Includes 6 hours of content, teen-specific safety education, and three exam attempts.

TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education): Required for first-time drivers 18+. Includes 4 hours of content and unlimited exam attempts.

If you're under 18, you must take DETS. If you're 18 or older, take TLSAE. There is no overlap.
