Why 50 Hours With Mom Isn't Enough

Why Most Miami Teens Need Professional Lessons Before the Road Test

Florida law puts the bar at 12 months with a permit, 50 hours of supervised driving with a parent, and 10 of those hours at night. That checks the box for the road test. It does not make your kid ready for Miami traffic.

We see the same pattern every week. A teen who logged 50 perfect hours with their dad freezes when the Palmetto backs up at 5 PM. Another can park anywhere in their own driveway but can't parallel park on Coral Way. Parent-supervised hours teach the car. Professional lessons teach the road.

A PalmWay instructor spends the first lesson figuring out where your teen actually is. Some have never touched a steering wheel. Others have been practicing for six months and just need to fix the bad habits before testing. We adjust to that, not the other way around.

The Path to a Florida License

How to Get a Florida Driver License at 15, 16, and 17

Most parents wish someone had explained this clearly the first time. Here it is.

1 Step 1. Age 15. Get the Learner's Permit.

Your teen takes the 4-hour TLSAE course online, passes the 50-question Permit Exam (also online), then visits FLHSMV with a parent. They walk out with the permit the same day.

2 Step 2. Hold the Permit for 12 Months.

The countdown is mandatory. During that year your teen logs 50 hours of supervised driving on the FLHSMV log form. Ten of those hours have to be after dark. No shortcuts, FLHSMV will ask to see the form at the road test.

3 Step 3. Take the 6-Hour DETS Course (Optional but Worth It).

DETS stands for Driver Education and Traffic Safety. It is not a license requirement. It pays for itself anyway because Geico, State Farm, Allstate, and most Florida carriers drop your teen's premium 5 to 15 percent when they complete it. On a $2,400 annual policy, that is $120 to $360 a year back in your pocket.

4 Step 4. Age 16. Behind-the-Wheel Lessons and the Road Test.

This is where we come in. Most teens need 10 to 15 hours of professional training. The road test at FLHSMV runs about 15 minutes and scores parking, turns, intersection handling, and traffic awareness. We bring our car so you don't add your teen to your auto insurance just for one test.

5 Step 5. Class E License With Restrictions.

At 16, solo driving is allowed 6 AM to 11 PM. After 11, a parent or licensed adult over 21 has to be in the car, unless your teen is on the way to or from work. At 17, the curfew tightens to 1 AM through 5 AM. At 18, all the restrictions lift.

Florida GDL Restrictions Explained

What Your Teen Can and Can't Do on a Class E License

Age 16 Age 17 Age 18+
Solo driving 6 AM to 11 PM 5 AM to 1 AM Anytime
Outside curfew Parent or adult 21+ in car, or commute to work Same No restriction
Handheld phone Banned for all drivers under 18 Banned for all drivers under 18 Banned in school and work zones only
Passengers No state limit (parent rules apply) No state limit No limit
Required in vehicle License, registration, insurance card Same Same

⚠️ The handheld ban is enforced. First offense is $30 plus court costs and three points on the license. Two points usually trigger a premium hike at renewal.

What We Teach

What Your Teen Actually Walks Away Knowing

Most driving schools post a list (lane changes, parking, turns) and leave it there. Here is what actually happens in our lessons.

🅿️ Lessons 1 and 2. Machine before traffic.

We start in an empty parking lot. Usually behind a closed retail center in Doral or off Kendall Drive on a Sunday morning. Your teen learns the steering, the brake, the gas, the mirrors, and the signals without anyone honking at them. Two hours of lot work and they have the feel of the pedals and the weight of the car. After that, slow residential streets.

🚦 Lessons 3 to 6. Real Miami traffic.

Bird Road, Coral Way, Kendall Drive, Bayshore, US-1. Four-way stops where every car decides to go at the same moment. The Coral Gables roundabouts. Pedestrian-heavy blocks near Brickell. We pick routes that match where your teen drives daily, then add harder roads as they get comfortable.

🛣️ Lessons 7 to 10. Highways.

I-95, the Palmetto (SR 826), the Dolphin (SR 836), the Turnpike. Merging at 65 is the single skill that fails teens months after they get the license. We teach the acceleration ramp, the head check, lane discipline, and how to read three lanes of traffic at once. Always optional, always paced to comfort.

🌙 Night driving sessions.

The 10 night hours in your 50-hour log are easier with structure. Two-hour evening sessions cover headlight glare, depth perception, and reading the road where streetlights end. Think Krome Avenue west of the Turnpike, or the stretches of US-1 south of Cutler Bay.

🎯 Road test prep.

The last lesson before the FLHSMV exam runs every maneuver the examiner scores: three-point turn, parallel park, controlled stop from 20 mph, observation at intersections, and proper signaling. We use the same route patterns examiners actually use at the Doral, Cutler Bay, and Margate test centers.

How Parents Stay in the Loop

What Parents Get From Every Lesson Package

Parents want to know two things. Is my kid getting safer, and are they ready for the test. We built three checkpoints around that.

📞 Progress call after every 5 lessons.

A 15-minute phone call from the instructor. What your teen mastered, what still needs work, and exactly what to practice during your supervised hours at home.

📋 Test readiness report.

Before we book the FLHSMV road test, you get a written assessment. Six skills graded against the actual examiner rubric. If your teen is not ready, we say so. We will not book a test we do not believe they will pass.

Reviews

What Miami Parents and Teens Are Saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"My daughter was terrified to drive. Honestly, I was terrified to teach her. Her instructor at PalmWay was patient in a way I couldn't be as her mom. She passed on the first try at Doral."

— Maria S., parent of 16-year-old, Coral Gables
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I learned more in 6 lessons with PalmWay than in 6 months of practicing with my dad. The instructor explained why I was doing things, not just what to do. Got my license at 16 and a half."

— Jordan K., age 17, Kendall
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Worth every dollar. My son already had his permit but he had picked up bad habits from his older brother. Two pre-test lessons fixed them and he passed."

— David R., parent, Pinecrest
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"They picked me up at Coral Reef every Wednesday after school. The instructor was chill, the car was clean, and I felt ready for the test. Passed."

— Camila T., age 16, South Miami

Ready to Get Your Teen on the Road

Two ways to start.

The cautious way: book a single 60-minute lesson at $70. We send an instructor, evaluate where your teen actually is, and recommend a package if it makes sense. If it doesn't, you're out one lesson, no pressure.

The faster way: pick a package above. First lesson scheduled within 2 to 4 days, sometimes same day if an instructor has a cancellation.
