What You Need for the Exam

Documents, vehicle requirements, and what to expect on test day.

πŸ“‹ Who Can Take the Exam

To get a Class E driver license in Florida, you need to pass the Driving Skills Test. This is a series of maneuvers that show you can safely operate a vehicle on public roads.

Before you can take the test, you must meet one of these requirements:

  • βœ“ Learner's license held for 12+ months, Or be at least 18 years old

If you need help making a DMV appointment, check our free appointment guide.

πŸš— Vehicle Requirements

βœ…

Our vehicles meet every requirement listed below.

Every car we provide for the road test is fully inspected, registered, and insured. You show up, take your test, and don't worry about anything else. Don't risk using your own car and getting turned away at the exam because of a small issue you didn't even notice.

πŸš— Book a Test-Ready Car

The vehicle you bring to the Class E Driving Skills Test must have a valid registration, proof of insurance, and pass a basic inspection by the examiner. The examiner will not start the test if any of the following issues are found:

-Horn, mirrors, signals, steering, brakes, or tires not working properly
-No windshield wipers on the driver's side
-Headlights, brake lights, or taillights not working
-Cracked or broken glass that blocks your view
-Expired registration tag
-Vehicle has no doors or doors don't open from both sides
-Seats are not fixed in place
-Driver cannot give hand signals from inside the car
-Jeep-type vehicles without proper framed doors with hinges
-Does not meet bumper height requirements
-Low-speed vehicles (top speed 20 to 25 mph)

πŸ›ž What You'll Do on the Test

During the Driving Skills Test, the examiner will ask you to perform these maneuvers. Here's what each one involves:

πŸ”„ Three Point Turn

Turn your car around in a space that's about 20 to 40 feet wide.

🚦 Approach of Crossing

Get into the right lane and check both directions before crossing.

🚢 Yield Right-of-Way

Let pedestrians cross, stop for emergency vehicles, and don't block intersections with other traffic.

πŸ…ΏοΈ Straight-In Parking

Park so your car is centered in the spot with nothing sticking out into the traffic lane.

⛰️ Parking on a Grade

Show you can park correctly on a hill, both uphill and downhill, with or without a curb.

πŸ›‘ Stop Quickly

Come to a fast, controlled stop when the examiner tells you to.

↩️ Backing

Drive in reverse for about 50 feet at a slow speed. Look over your shoulder, not at the mirror or camera.

πŸ›‘ Obey Stop Signs

Stop completely before the stop line or crosswalk and wait until it's safe to go.

πŸš₯ Obey Traffic Signals

Approach traffic lights at a speed that lets you stop if the light changes. On green, wait for the intersection to clear first.

πŸ‘‹ Signal and Turn

Get in the correct lane and signal at least 100 feet before your turn. Hand or mechanical signals both work.

🏎️ Passing

Check ahead and behind before passing another vehicle. Only pass when you can do it safely.

πŸ›£οΈ Stay in Proper Lane

Keep to the right lane unless you're on a one-way street. Only switch lanes when it's safe.

πŸ“ Follow at a Safe Distance

Don't tailgate. Keep at least a four-second gap between you and the car ahead.

πŸ™Œ Use Proper Posture

Both hands on the wheel at all times. Don't rest your arm or elbow on the window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the road test in Florida.

What do I need to be eligible for the Driving Skills Test? +

You must hold a valid Florida learner's license for at least 12 months from the date it was issued, or be at least 18 years old. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must certify that you have at least 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 hours at night.

How do I schedule a road test appointment? +

You need to book your appointment through the FLHSMV online system (OASIS) or directly at your local FLHSMV office. If you need help with the process, we have a free appointment guide that walks you through every step.

Can I use my own car for the road test? +

Yes, but your car must have valid registration, proof of insurance, and pass a basic inspection by the examiner before the test starts. If the examiner finds any issues like broken lights, cracked glass, expired tags, or missing mirrors, your test will be cancelled on the spot. That's why we offer a test-ready vehicle guaranteed to pass.

What happens if I fail the road test? +

The examiner will explain the mistakes after the test. You can schedule another attempt on a different day. Only one attempt per day is allowed. We recommend taking a practice lesson before your next try.

Do you provide pick-up and drop-off? +

Yes. We can pick you up from your home, take you to the FLHSMV location, and drive you back after. Availability depends on your area and schedule.

Which FLHSMV locations do you cover? +

We provide cars for road tests across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, including Midway Crossings, Lauderdale Lakes, Margate, Sunrise, Pembroke Pines, and Pompano Citi Centre.

How far in advance should I book? +

Please send your test details (location, date, time) at least 3 days before your test so we can reserve a car for you.

What maneuvers will I have to perform on the test? +

You will perform a three-point turn, parking, backing up, obeying signs and signals, yielding, turning, lane changes, and keeping a safe distance.

Can I bring passengers during the test? +

No. Only you and the examiner are allowed in the car. Exception: language interpreter if needed.

What if I'm under 18? +

You must hold your learner's license for at least one year with no violations. A parent must certify 50 hours of driving, including 10 at night.

Do I need to complete any courses before the road test? +

Yes. You must pass the Class E Knowledge Exam and complete TLSAE. Under 18 must also complete DETS course.

Can I use a learner's license from another state? +

No. You must have a valid Florida learner's license. Out-of-state permits are not accepted.
