Ready for Test Day

Feel calm and confident on test day.

Getting your Florida driver license in Hialeah Gardens means passing the Class E Driving Skills Test at the Hialeah Gardens Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center, the state (FLHSMV) office at 11093 NW 138th St, Suites 1–9. This page explains how the test works at this particular office, which streets around NW 138th St and NW 107th Ave you are likely to drive, what your car must have to pass the pre-test inspection, what documents to bring, and how PalmWay Driving School can put you in a test-ready car if you don't have one of your own.

Where the Road Test Takes Place in Hialeah Gardens

The road test in Hialeah Gardens is given at the Hialeah Gardens Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center, a state driver license office in Miami-Dade County operated by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). The office occupies Suites 1–9 of a shopping plaza at 11093 NW 138th St, Hialeah Gardens, FL 33018, a short distance west of NW 107th Ave; the phone number is 305-375-5448. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and on Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm. You book the driving test appointment yourself through the FLHSMV online appointment system — a driving school cannot book it for you. On test day the examiner walks out to your car in the plaza parking lot, inspects the vehicle, and the test begins right there.

📍

State Driver License Office

Hialeah Gardens Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center, 11093 NW 138th St, Suites 1–9, Hialeah Gardens, FL 33018 · 305-375-5448. A state FLHSMV service center for Miami-Dade County — driving tests are by appointment only, booked through the FLHSMV online system.

Arrive 10 Min Early

Hours: Mon–Fri 8:00am–5:00pm, Sat 8:00am–1:00pm. Be at the office at least 10 minutes before your slot. Late arrivals lose the appointment and have to rebook — allow extra time for plaza traffic and for the signal at NW 107th Ave.

🅿️

Parking Lot Start

The examiner meets you at your car in the plaza parking lot, runs through the vehicle inspection, and starts the test from there. Park where you can back out cleanly — the plaza is shared with other businesses and customers are constantly pulling in and out.

What the Roads Look Like in Hialeah Gardens

The Hialeah Gardens road test uses the residential streets and main roads around the office. The entire test lasts about 15–20 minutes. You will not drive on Florida's Turnpike (the Homestead Extension, HEFT), the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) or I-75 — highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test. Hialeah Gardens is a compact, densely built suburban city on the Miami-Dade street grid, wedged between the truck traffic of Okeechobee Road (US-27) and the Miami Canal on one side and Hialeah's western neighborhoods on the other. Around the office you'll find shopping plazas along NW 107th Ave and NW 138th St, townhouse and single-family blocks behind them, and warehouse districts toward Medley. There is no published fixed route: the examiner usually stays on the streets close to the office and mixes a few residential blocks with a stretch of arterial road.

🛣️ Main Roads on the Route

  • NW 138th St — the office's own street, a multi-lane road lined with plazas and driveways
  • NW 107th Ave — the main north–south arterial through Hialeah Gardens, with left-turn pockets and long signal cycles
  • Hialeah Gardens Blvd (NW 103rd St) — the city's east–west commercial spine, about two miles south
  • Okeechobee Rd (US-27) — the divided truck corridor along the Miami Canal; examiners typically keep the test on the calmer grid streets rather than on this road
  • Numbered residential streets and avenues off NW 138th St — narrow two-lane blocks with stop signs, parked cars and speed humps

🚦 Speed Limits to Know

Residential zones 25–30 mph
Main corridors 35–45 mph
Test duration 15–20 min

🚫 No highway driving — Florida's Turnpike (HEFT), the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and I-75 are all close to Hialeah Gardens but are NOT part of the Class E road test.

Common Mistakes at the Hialeah Gardens Road Test

Most people who fail at Hialeah Gardens can drive perfectly well — they fail because of small, fixable errors on specific road features in the neighborhood around NW 138th St: busy plaza driveways, wide arterials with turn pockets, and quiet residential blocks full of stop signs.

🛑 Rolling Stops

The single most common failure point. The residential grid streets north and south of NW 138th St are controlled almost entirely by stop signs, and the examiner watches for a complete stop at every one. The wheels must stop moving completely — a slow creep through the intersection counts as running the sign, even when nobody else is around.

🔀 Lane Choice on NW 107th Ave

NW 107th Ave and NW 138th St have multiple through lanes plus dedicated left-turn pockets at the signals, and the plaza entrances create a lot of last-second merging. Picking the wrong lane before a turn, or drifting into a turn pocket too late, is a point deduction — decide on your lane early and signal well before you move.

🏫 Speed Control Near School Zones

Hialeah Gardens has several public and charter schools tucked into its residential blocks, and Hialeah Gardens Senior High School sits on Hialeah Gardens Blvd. If your test falls during school arrival or dismissal hours, the flashing school-zone limits apply and every mile over counts against you. Watch the residential streets too — many carry speed humps and 25 mph signs.

🪞 Improper Mirror Checks

Skipping the mirror and shoulder check before a lane change is marked down every time. The examiner watches your eyes and head movement, not just where the car ends up. With customers backing out of plaza spaces and cars turning into the shopping centers along NW 138th St, an obvious head check before every move is what the examiner wants to see.

Vehicle Requirements for the Hialeah Gardens Road Test

Before you drive a single foot, the state examiner inspects your vehicle right in the plaza parking lot. If the car fails any item on the inspection, the test does not take place and you lose your appointment — you will have to book a new slot through the FLHSMV system. Go through this list the day before your test.

Don't Have a Car for the Road Test?

PalmWay Driving School is a licensed Florida driving school (FLHSMV Commercial Driving School License #5218). We are based in Hollywood, Broward County, and we drive to the Hialeah Gardens office to provide a vehicle for your already-scheduled road test appointment. Road-test car packages start at $90 for the car only and $140 for the car plus a one-hour warm-up lesson right before your slot. The road test itself is conducted by a state examiner — we do not administer or grade the driving test.

🚗

Road-Ready Vehicle

Our car meets every item on the state inspection list for the Class E Driving Skills Test — signals, horn, brake lights, tires, current tag and registration — so the inspection in the Hialeah Gardens parking lot is a formality, not a gamble.

🛡️

Fully Insured

You don't need to be added to a relative's policy or borrow a friend's paperwork — the vehicle is covered under the school's commercial insurance, and the proof of insurance matches the car, exactly as the examiner requires.

🔄

Practice on Similar Roads

Our driving lessons take place on roads like the ones used around the Hialeah Gardens office — wide arterials with turn pockets, plaza driveways and stop-sign residential grids — so the intersections you meet on test day feel familiar.

📚 Adults 18+: TLSAE Course Required

Applicants 18 and older complete the TLSAE course instead. DETS and TLSAE are two different courses, and which one you need depends strictly on your age at the time you apply.

How to Schedule Your Hialeah Gardens Road Test

The steps below happen in a fixed order and you cannot skip ahead. You book the road test appointment yourself through the FLHSMV online appointment system, selecting the Hialeah Gardens Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center as your location — no driving school can book it on your behalf. Because this is a state office in Miami-Dade County, weekday slots run from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday slots from 8:00am to 1:00pm.

1

Complete the Required Course

DETS if you are under 18, TLSAE if you are 18 or older.

2

Pass the Written Knowledge Exam

The knowledge exam includes questions on drugs and alcohol.

3

Receive Your Florida Learner's License

In Florida it is called a "learner's license" — not a permit.

4

Hold Your Learner's License for the Required Period

Drivers under 18 must hold it for at least 12 months before taking the road test.

5

Schedule Your Road Test

Open the FLHSMV online appointment system, choose the Hialeah Gardens office at 11093 NW 138th St, and pick an available weekday or Saturday slot. Walk-ins are not accepted for driving tests. If you need our car, tell us the date and time as soon as your appointment is confirmed.

🔑

One Important Thing About Your Florida License

In Florida, passing your road test in an automatic transmission vehicle still leaves you legally allowed to drive a manual transmission car afterward. The state does not restrict your license based on the type of vehicle you tested in.

That is different from some other states. Whatever car you drive at the Hialeah Gardens office on test day — including our automatic school car — your Class E license covers both automatic and manual vehicles.

What Happens on Test Day

📍

Arrive & Find Entrance

Arrive early at the plaza on NW 138th St and locate Suites 1–9 and the area where driving tests are staged.

👤

Examiner Comes to You

The state examiner walks out to your vehicle in the parking lot — you do not drive up to a window.

🔦

Vehicle Inspection

The inspection comes first and takes about 2–3 minutes: signals, horn, brake lights, documents.

🚗

Start Driving

Once the car passes inspection, you pull out of the plaza and drive for 15–20 minutes on the surrounding streets.

🏁

Return & Score

You drive back to the starting point in the parking lot and receive your score on the spot.

🪪

License Issuance

If you pass, the result is reported to the state and you go inside the Hialeah Gardens office to complete the license issuance steps.

If You Pass

Your result is reported to the state. Head inside the service center to finish the license issuance steps — bring the same documents you used for the test.

If You Fail

The examiner hands you a score sheet that shows exactly which errors caused the failure. You can book a new appointment after a waiting period — and the score sheet tells you precisely what to practice before then.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a driving school car for my road test in Hialeah Gardens?

Yes. PalmWay Driving School provides an inspected, insured vehicle for your already-scheduled appointment at the Hialeah Gardens office, and an instructor drives it there from our Hollywood base. We do not schedule the test for you and we do not conduct it — the state examiner does. Packages start at $90 for the car only or $140 with a one-hour warm-up lesson before your slot.

How do I book the road test at the Hialeah Gardens office?

Through the FLHSMV online appointment system — the Hialeah Gardens Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center is a state office in Miami-Dade County, so all driving test appointments are made there. Select the Hialeah Gardens location at 11093 NW 138th St and choose a slot. Walk-ins are not accepted for road tests, and a driving school cannot make the booking for you.

Is the Hialeah Gardens office open on Saturday for road tests?

The office is open Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm in addition to Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm. Whether a driving test slot is available on a given Saturday depends on the FLHSMV appointment calendar, so check it early — Saturday openings at Miami-Dade offices tend to be taken quickly.

Where do I park, and where does the examiner meet me?

The office is in Suites 1–9 of a shopping plaza at 11093 NW 138th St, and you use the plaza's parking lot. Check in, then wait at your car — the examiner comes out to you, inspects the vehicle, and the test starts from that parking space. Park somewhere you can back out easily, because pulling out of the space is the first thing the examiner sees you do.

Which roads are used on the Hialeah Gardens road test?

There is no official published route. Examiners typically stay close to the office: NW 138th St, a stretch of NW 107th Ave, and the residential grid streets behind the plazas, where you'll meet stop signs, speed humps and parked cars. Florida's Turnpike (HEFT), the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and I-75 are never part of the standard Class E test, and examiners generally keep off the heavy truck traffic on Okeechobee Rd (US-27).

Do I have to live in Hialeah Gardens or Miami-Dade County to test here?

No. The Hialeah Gardens office is a state FLHSMV driver license service center, not a county-run office, so it is not restricted to city or county residents. Anyone with a valid Florida learner's license can book an available appointment there — which is why drivers from Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Medley and beyond use it.

How soon can I retest if I fail?

Florida requires a waiting period before you can retake the driving test. Check the current state waiting period in the FLHSMV appointment system when you rebook, and use the examiner's score sheet to focus your practice in the meantime.

If I test in an automatic, can I still drive a manual after I pass?

Yes. Florida issues one standard Class E license regardless of the transmission you used at the Hialeah Gardens office. Both manual and automatic vehicles are covered.
