What the Roads Look Like in Florida City
The Florida City road test uses the flat, straight streets around the office: Krome Ave itself, the east–west roads that cross it, and the quiet residential grid on either side. The whole test takes about 15–20 minutes. The examiner usually stays on the streets close to the office — you will not drive on Florida's Turnpike Homestead Extension (HEFT), which ends just east of here, and highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test. Expect a mix of everyday South Dade traffic: farm and nursery trucks coming in from the Redland, RVs and trailers heading for the Keys, and local drivers running errands along Krome Ave.

🚫 No highway driving — Florida's Turnpike Homestead Extension (HEFT) and the fast Keys-bound stretch of US-1 / S Dixie Hwy are NOT part of the Class E road test. The test stays on local streets near Krome Ave.
Common Mistakes at the Florida City Road Test
Most people who fail in Florida City can drive perfectly well — they lose points on small, fixable habits at specific spots around Krome Ave. The wide, straight roads look easy, which is exactly why drivers relax and get careless. Practice the specific intersections around Krome Ave beforehand and these habits disappear.
🛑 Rolling Stops on the Residential Grid
The number-one failure point. The numbered side streets west of Krome Ave and the blocks off Lucy St and Davis Pkwy are full of two-way and four-way stop signs, and the examiner watches for the wheels to stop turning completely. Slowing to a crawl and easing through is scored as a missed stop.
🔀 Lane Choice on Krome Ave and Palm Dr
Krome Ave has left-turn pockets and, in places, a center two-way turn lane; Palm Dr widens out as it approaches US-1 and the Turnpike ramps. Drifting into the turn lane too early, or being in the wrong lane when the examiner asks for a turn, costs points — pick your lane well ahead of the intersection.
🏫 Speed Control Near School Zones
Florida City Elementary and the schools in central Homestead sit on or near the residential streets used for the test. If your appointment falls during school hours, the flashing school-zone limits apply, and going even a few miles per hour over is an automatic deduction.
🪞 Improper Mirror Checks Around Trucks and Trailers
Krome Ave carries farm trucks from the Redland and trailers headed to the Keys, so lane changes need a real mirror-and-shoulder check. The examiner watches your eyes and head, not just the car's position — a lane change with no visible check is marked down every time.
Vehicle Requirements for the Florida City Road Test
Before anyone drives anywhere, the state examiner inspects the car in the Krome Ave parking lot. If a single item fails, the test is cancelled on the spot and you lose the appointment — which, this far south, often means another long trip on another day.

Who Can Take the Road Test in Florida City
Required Documents by Status
🎓 Teens 15–17: DETS Course Required
Anyone aged 15–17 must finish the DETS course before the road test. In Florida this is mandatory for every applicant under 18 — there is no way around it.
📚 Adults 18+: TLSAE Course Required
Applicants 18 and older complete the TLSAE course instead. They are two different courses, and which one you need depends strictly on your age.
How to Schedule Your Florida City Road Test

Complete the Required Course

One Important Thing About Your Florida License
In Florida, passing the road test in an automatic-transmission car still leaves you legally allowed to drive a manual afterward. The state does not restrict your license based on the type of vehicle you tested in.
That differs from some other states. Whatever car you drive on Krome Ave on test day, your Class E license covers both automatic and manual vehicles.

The Florida City office serves the 33034 zip code along with Homestead (33030, 33033, 33035), the Redland (33031) and Princeton / Naranja (33032). It is the only state driver license office giving road tests in the far south of the county, so if no appointment fits, the next options are north along US-1 and the Turnpike. Note that the Coral Gables, Downtown Miami and Miami Beach offices do not give driving exams — don't book there by mistake. Does the Florida City office give road tests on Saturdays?
The office is open Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm in addition to Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm. Whether a Saturday road-test slot is available depends on what the FLHSMV online appointment system shows for that date, so check it early — weekend slots tend to disappear first.
Which roads will I drive on during the Florida City test?
There is no published official route, but the examiner typically stays close to the office: N Krome Ave, the cross streets such as Davis Pkwy (SW 328th St), Lucy St (SW 336th St) and Palm Dr (SW 344th St), and the residential blocks just off them. Expect several stop-sign intersections, at least one signalized left turn, and a stretch at 35–45 mph on Krome Ave. Farm traffic is heavier during the winter harvest season, so leave extra following distance behind slow trucks.
Is the Turnpike or US-1 part of the Florida City road test?
No. The standard Class E test stays on local streets. You will not be sent onto Florida's Turnpike Homestead Extension (HEFT), and the high-speed Keys-bound section of US-1 / S Dixie Hwy is not part of the test either.
Where do I park when I arrive at 1448 N Krome Ave?
Use the office's own parking lot off Krome Ave — the examiner meets you at the car there, so this is also where the test begins and ends. Arrive at least 10 minutes early so you have time to park, settle in and adjust mirrors and seat before your name is called. How soon can I retest if I fail in Florida City?
Florida requires a waiting period before you can retest. Check the current state rule when you rebook in the FLHSMV appointment system — you can choose Florida City again or any other Miami-Dade office that gives driving exams.

Yes. Florida issues one standard Class E license regardless of the transmission you used on test day. Both manual and automatic vehicles are covered.
