Ready for Test Day

Feel calm and confident on test day.

If you live in Flagami, Westchester, West Miami or anywhere along W Flagler St, the Midway Crossings driver license office is probably the closest place to take your Florida Class E Driving Skills Test. It sits inside the Midway Crossings shopping center at 7795 W Flagler St, Space 82C, Miami, FL 33144 — right where Flagler meets the Palmetto Expressway. This page explains how the test works at this office, which streets the examiner is likely to use, what your car must pass before you leave the parking lot, which documents to have in hand, and how to book your appointment through the state system.

Where the Road Test Takes Place at Midway Crossings

The road test is given at the Midway Crossings Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center, a state driver license office in Miami-Dade County operated by FLHSMV. The office is located at 7795 W Flagler St, Space 82C, Miami, FL 33144, inside a large retail plaza anchored by big-box stores at the corner of W Flagler St and the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826). Phone: 305-375-5448. Hours: Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am–1:00pm. Road tests are by appointment, and you book the appointment yourself through the FLHSMV online appointment system — not through a driving school. On the day of the test the examiner comes out to meet you in the plaza parking lot, checks your vehicle, and starts the driving portion from there.

📍

State Driver License Office

Midway Crossings is a state (FLHSMV) driver license service center in Miami-Dade County, not a private testing site. Look for Space 82C in the shopping center at 7795 W Flagler St — the office sits among the retail storefronts, so give yourself a minute to find the right door.

Arrive 10 Min Early

Be parked and ready at least 10 minutes before your appointment time. W Flagler St and the Palmetto interchange back up during weekday rush hours, so leave home with extra margin. Late arrivals lose their slot and have to rebook.

🅿️

Parking Lot Start

The plaza has a large shared parking lot. The examiner meets you at your car, runs through the vehicle inspection, and the test begins right there — you will pull out of the shopping center onto the surrounding streets.

📌 Midway Crossings Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center — 7795 W Flagler St, Space 82C, Miami, FL 33144 · 305-375-5448 · Mon–Fri 8:00am–5:00pm, Sat 8:00am–1:00pm · Road tests by FLHSMV appointment only.

What the Roads Look Like Around Midway Crossings

The area around the office is classic western Miami-Dade: a flat numbered grid of residential streets between busy east-west arterials. The examiner usually stays on the streets close to the plaza, so expect a mix of a wide multi-lane corridor such as W Flagler St, a few quieter numbered avenues, and residential blocks in Flagami or Westchester with stop signs at almost every corner. The driving portion lasts about 15–20 minutes. You will not be asked to drive on the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) or the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836), even though the on-ramps are right next to the shopping center — highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test.

🛣️ Main Roads Near the Office

  • W Flagler St — the main east-west corridor in front of the plaza
  • SW 8th St (Tamiami Trail / US-41) — about a mile south
  • NW 7th St — the next major east-west road to the north
  • SW 72nd Ave (Milam Dairy Rd north of Flagler)
  • SW 87th Ave (Galloway Rd) — west of the Palmetto
  • SW 67th Ave (Ludlam Rd) — toward West Miami

🚦 Speed Limits to Know

Residential zones 25–30 mph
Main corridors 35–40 mph
Test duration 15–20 min

W Flagler St here is a wide commercial strip with shopping-center driveways, bus stops and dedicated left-turn lanes at the signals — the kind of road where the examiner watches your lane position and your mirror checks. Turn off Flagler onto any of the numbered avenues and within a block or two you are in quiet residential streets with single-family homes, parked cars on both sides and four-way stops. That contrast — busy arterial, then slow neighborhood grid — is what a typical test from this office feels like.

🚫 No highway driving — the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) are NOT part of the Class E road test, even though both are minutes from the office.

Common Mistakes at the Midway Crossings Road Test

Most people who fail here can drive perfectly well. They lose points on small, correctable habits that the street layout around W Flagler St and the Palmetto brings out — and a few of those habits are worth practicing before test day.

🛑 Rolling Stops on the Residential Grid

The number one failure point. The neighborhood streets of Flagami and Westchester behind the plaza have stop signs at nearly every intersection, and the examiner watches for a complete stop at each one. The wheels must come to a full standstill before you look and proceed — creeping through a four-way stop counts against you every time.

🔀 Lane Choice on W Flagler St

Flagler has multiple through lanes plus left-turn pockets at the signals, and the plaza driveways feed straight into it. Ending up in the wrong lane before a turn, or drifting while merging out of the shopping center, is a point deduction — decide on your lane early and signal before you move.

🏫 Speed Control Near School Zones

The residential streets south of Flagler have several school zones, including around Miami Coral Park Senior High off SW 16th St. If your appointment falls during school hours, the flashing limits apply and any speed over the posted number is scored against you.

🪞 Improper Mirror and Blind-Spot Checks

Skipping the mirror and shoulder check before a lane change is marked down consistently, especially on a busy road like Flagler or SW 8th St. The examiner watches your eyes and head movement, not just where the car ends up — make the checks visible.

Vehicle Requirements for the Midway Crossings Road Test

Before anything else happens, the state examiner walks around your car in the plaza parking lot and checks it item by item. If the vehicle fails any part of the inspection, the test is cancelled on the spot and you lose the appointment — so check every point below the night before.

Documents to Bring to Your Midway Crossings Road Test

⚠️ One missing document cancels the appointment. The staff at Midway Crossings cannot make an exception on the day of the test, and you will have to rebook through the state system.

📋 Required for Everyone

  • Your Florida learner's license (Florida calls it a "learner's license," not a permit) — the physical card, not a photo of it
  • Proof of insurance for the exact vehicle you are testing in
  • Current registration for that same vehicle

👤 If You Are Under 18

  • A signed parental or guardian consent form
  • ℹ️ You must have held your learner's license for at least 12 months before you are eligible to take the road test — the office checks the issue date

Who Can Take the Road Test at Midway Crossings

Anyone holding a valid Florida learner's license can test at this office — you do not need to live in a particular zip code or city. What matters is that your identity and legal-presence documents match what the state already has on file. The table below shows what each status typically needs to have ready.

Required Documents by Status

Status Documents Needed
🇺🇸 US Citizen Passport, birth certificate, or Social Security card
🟢 Permanent Resident Green card (Form I-551 / I-151) or I-797 with valid passport
✈️ Tourist / Visitor Form I-94 with valid passport and US visa
🎓 Student Visa I-20 with valid passport

🎓 Teens 15–17: DETS Course Required

Drivers aged 15–17 must finish the DETS course before they can take the road test. This is mandatory for everyone under 18 in Florida, no matter which office you test at.

📚 Adults 18+: TLSAE Course Required

Adults 18 and older complete the TLSAE course instead. They are two different courses, and which one you need depends strictly on your age — not on where you live or which office you choose.

How to Schedule Your Road Test at Midway Crossings

The steps below happen in a fixed order and none of them can be skipped. Because Midway Crossings is a state FLHSMV service center, the road test appointment is booked through the FLHSMV online appointment system — you pick the Midway Crossings location, the service "driving test" and an open time slot. A driving school cannot book it for you. Weekday slots and Saturday-morning slots both exist, and popular times fill up, so check the system early.

1

Complete the Required Course

DETS if you are under 18, TLSAE if you are 18 or older.

2

Pass the Written Knowledge Exam

The knowledge exam includes drug and alcohol questions as well as road signs and rules.

3

Receive Your Florida Learner's License

Florida calls this a "learner's license" — not a permit. You need the physical card for the road test.

4

Hold Your Learner's License for the Required Period

Teens under 18 must hold it for at least 12 months before the road test. Adults have no waiting period beyond the license itself.

5

Schedule Your Road Test at Midway Crossings

Log in to the FLHSMV online appointment system, choose the Midway Crossings Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center at 7795 W Flagler St, and pick a slot. Then arrange your car — your own or ours — for that date and time.

🔑

One Important Thing About Your Florida License

In Florida, passing your road test in an automatic transmission vehicle does not limit you to automatics afterward. You are legally allowed to drive a manual transmission car as well — Florida does not restrict your license based on the type of vehicle you tested in.

Some other states do it differently, which is why this question comes up so often. Whatever car you drive at Midway Crossings on test day, your Class E license covers both automatic and manual vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a driving school car for my road test at Midway Crossings?

Yes. PalmWay provides a fully insured, inspection-ready vehicle for your already-scheduled appointment at 7795 W Flagler St, starting at $90 for the car only or $140 with a 1-hour warm-up lesson beforehand. We do not schedule the test for you and we do not conduct it — the state examiner does.

How do I book a road test at the Midway Crossings office?

Midway Crossings is a state FLHSMV driver license service center, so you book through the FLHSMV online appointment system: select the Midway Crossings location, choose the driving test service and pick an available date and time. Walk-ins are not accepted for road tests. You can also call the office at 305-375-5448 with questions about the location.

Can I take the road test on a Saturday at Midway Crossings?

The office is open Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm in addition to Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm. Whether a driving-test slot is available on a given Saturday depends on what the FLHSMV appointment system shows — Saturday mornings are popular, so book early if you need one.

Where do I park for the road test, and where does the examiner meet me?

Park in the Midway Crossings shopping-center lot near Space 82C. It is a large shared lot, so arrive early enough to find a space close to the office and check in. The examiner comes out to your car, inspects it there, and the test starts from the parking lot.

Will I have to drive on the Palmetto Expressway or the Dolphin Expressway?

No. Even though the SR 826 ramps are right beside the plaza and SR 836 is a short drive north, the standard Class E test stays on local roads such as W Flagler St, the numbered avenues and the residential streets of Flagami and Westchester. Highway driving is not part of the test.

Which streets is the examiner likely to use from this office?

There is no published fixed route, but the examiner generally stays close to the office. Expect W Flagler St, side streets between Flagler and SW 8th St or NW 7th St, and numbered avenues such as SW 72nd Ave, SW 67th Ave (Ludlam Rd) or SW 87th Ave (Galloway Rd). Practising stops, turns and lane changes in that area is the best preparation.

How soon can I retest if I fail at Midway Crossings?

Florida requires a waiting period before you retest. Check the current state rule when you rebook through the FLHSMV appointment system — you can choose Midway Crossings again or any other Miami-Dade office that gives driving exams.

If I test in an automatic, can I still drive a manual after I pass?

Yes. Florida issues a standard Class E license regardless of the transmission type you used during the test. Both manual and automatic vehicles are covered.
