The office sits on S Congress Ave a few blocks south of W Atlantic Ave, close to the Delray Beach Tri-Rail station, in a stretch of county buildings, office parks and warehouses. The examiner meets you in the parking lot, checks your vehicle, and starts the test right from the lot.

Driving tests in Delray Beach are administered at a Palm Beach County Tax Collector service center, by reservation only, for Palm Beach County residents only. If your address is in another county, you must test in that county instead.

The service center has its own surface parking lot off S Congress Ave. The examiner walks out to your car, runs the inspection, and the driving portion begins as you pull out of the lot onto Congress Ave.
What the Roads Look Like in Delray Beach
There is no published official route, but the examiner usually stays on the streets around the office. From 501 S Congress Ave that means the S Congress Ave corridor itself — a wide, multi-lane arterial with center turn lanes and a 45 mph limit — plus the nearby east-west roads such as W Atlantic Ave (SR 806), Lowson Blvd and Linton Blvd, and the quieter residential streets west of Congress around Homewood Blvd. The Tri-Rail and CSX railroad tracks run parallel to Congress Ave just to the east, so an eastbound turn onto Atlantic Ave or Linton Blvd can bring you to a railroad crossing. The whole test lasts about 15–20 minutes. You will not drive on I-95, which runs just east of the tracks, or on Florida's Turnpike to the west — highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test.

Common Mistakes at the Delray Beach Road Test

🛑 Rolling Stops on the Side Streets
The single most common failure point. The subdivisions off Homewood Blvd and Lowson Blvd are full of two-way and four-way stop signs, and the examiner watches for a complete stop behind the line — the wheels must stop turning entirely before you proceed. Slowing to a crawl and rolling through is marked as a violation every time.
🔀 Lane Choice on S Congress Ave and W Atlantic Ave
Both roads have multiple through lanes plus dedicated left-turn pockets, and Atlantic Ave adds right-turn lanes at the major plazas. Drifting into the wrong lane before a turn, or turning from a through lane, costs points — decide on your lane early, signal, check the mirror and blind spot, then move over smoothly.
🏫 Speed Control Near School Zones
Atlantic Community High School sits on W Atlantic Ave a short distance west of Congress Ave, and there are elementary and middle schools in the neighborhoods nearby. If your reservation falls during school arrival or dismissal hours, the flashing school-zone limits apply and every mile per hour over counts against you.
🚂 Railroad Crossings and Mirror Checks
The Tri-Rail/CSX tracks just east of Congress Ave mean you may cross a railroad grade crossing on Atlantic Ave or Linton Blvd — never stop on the tracks and never start across when the gates are moving. Separately, examiners consistently mark down missing mirror and head checks before lane changes and backing; they watch your eyes and head, not just the car's position.
Vehicle Requirements for the Delray Beach Road Test
Before you leave the parking lot at 501 S Congress Ave, the examiner inspects the vehicle. If any item on the list fails, the test does not take place and your reservation is lost — you will have to book a new weekday slot through the Tax Collector's reservation system.

Complete the Required Course
DETS if you are under 18, TLSAE if you are 18 or older. Keep the completion certificate — it is checked in the system.
Pass the Written Knowledge Exam
Drug and alcohol questions are part of the knowledge exam, so study that section of the handbook as well as road signs and rules.
Receive Your Florida Learner's License

One Important Thing About Your Florida License
In Florida, passing your road test in an automatic transmission vehicle does not limit you afterward — you are still legally allowed to drive a manual transmission car. Florida does not place a restriction on your license based on the type of vehicle you tested in at the Delray Beach service center or anywhere else in the state.
