What to Bring to Your Florida Road Test

Bring your original learner permit, REAL ID proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, two proofs of Florida address, a registered and insured vehicle that can pass a safety inspection, and a licensed driver 18 or older to get you to the site and back. Drivers under 18 add a signed 50-hour driving log and parental forms.

What changes between locations is the wait, the scheduling system, and the fee structure, not the paperwork. Pack everything the night before, because a missing form or a burned-out brake light ends the appointment before you ever pull out of the lot.

Personal documents

• Original Florida learner permit. The physical card only. Copies and phone photos are not accepted.
• Proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport or an original or state-issued birth certificate.
• Proof of Social Security number. Your Social Security card or a W-2 form showing the full number.
• Two proofs of residential address. A utility bill, bank statement, or current-year school transcript showing your name and Florida address.

Documents you bring to take the Florida road test

Only a few items actually get you into the driver seat. The examiner needs to confirm three things before the test starts: that you are the person who holds a valid learner permit, that you are eligible to test today, and that the car is legal to drive. Everything else in your folder is for the transaction that happens after you pass.

That distinction matters on a busy Saturday in Miami-Dade or Broward. If you show up with a permit and a clean car but no Social Security card, you can still take the driving exam. You just will not walk out with a license that day.

Original Florida learner permit required at the road test

Bring the physical permit card, not a photo of it. Every testing site in Florida requires the original document, and copies are rejected on sight. If your permit is lost or damaged, order a replacement before your test date rather than hoping the examiner can pull it up in the system. REAL ID proof of identity for the Florida driving test

A U.S. passport or an original birth certificate issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics or an equivalent state agency satisfies the REAL ID identity requirement. Hospital souvenir certificates and photocopies do not, and that single mistake sends more applicants home than any other paperwork issue.

Check your learner permit first. If it already carries a gold star in the upper right corner, you are REAL ID compliant and you do not need to re-establish identity. Two proofs of Florida residential address

You need two separate documents showing your name and current Florida address. Accepted options include a utility bill, a bank or credit card statement, a lease, and a school transcript from the current academic year. The two documents cannot come from the same account or the same issuer.

Teens and young adults who live with family rarely have bills in their own name. In that case, a parent or the person you live with signs a Certification of Address form, and you bring two address documents in their name instead.

Proof of Social Security number

An original Social Security card works, and so does a W-2 tax form that displays the complete number. A pay stub with a truncated number does not. If you have never been issued a Social Security number, you sign an affidavit at the counter stating that, which is common for recent arrivals to South Florida.

Documents you need after you pass to be issued the Class E license

Passing the driving exam and holding a license are two separate events. The skills test confirms that you can operate a vehicle safely. The license itself is a credential that has to be produced, photographed, and paid for, and that happens at a tax collector office or driver license service center.

When you test with a state-authorized third-party provider, your result is transmitted to FLHSMV electronically, usually the same day. You then go to a service center with your full document folder to finish the transaction, pay the upgrade fee, and have your photo taken. Bring identity, Social Security, and address documents to both appointments so you are never sent back for a second trip. Vehicle documents required for the Florida road test

You supply the car. No testing site in Florida provides one, and examiners will not test in a vehicle they consider unsafe or unsanitary. The car does not have to be yours, but the paperwork attached to it has to be current.

Valid Florida vehicle registration

Bring the registration card, not a renewal notice. The registration must be active for the current period, which means a car registered through a family member, a roommate, or an employer is fine as long as the document has not expired. Applicants who do not have access to a suitable vehicle can use ours, since a car provided for the road test already meets every inspection and insurance requirement.

Proof of PIP and PDL insurance

Florida requires a minimum of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability, and the vehicle you test in must carry both. Acceptable proof includes an insurance ID card, the policy itself, a declaration page, or a binder from the insurer. Digital proof on a phone is accepted, so a screenshot of your carrier app is enough as long as the policy dates are visible.

Valid and securely attached license plate

The plate has to be current and mounted, not sitting on the dashboard or taped to the rear window. A temporary paper tag is acceptable while it is still within its validity dates. Examiners check the plate against the registration before the inspection begins.

Using a rental or borrowed car for the Florida driving test

Most rental companies prohibit their vehicles from being used for driving exams, and that restriction is buried in the contract rather than announced at the counter. Call the company and confirm in advance. If rental use is permitted, the authorized driver named on the current rental agreement must complete a Rental Vehicle Affidavit, and the agreement itself has to be presented at the test site for verification.

Vehicle safety inspection checklist for the Florida road test

Before the exam starts, the examiner walks the car and checks that it meets the safety standards set in Chapter 316 of the Florida Statutes. If any item fails, the test does not happen and the appointment is rescheduled. Examiners can also decline to test in a vehicle that is dirty, has wet seats, or has plastic sheeting in place of a window.

Florida does not require an emissions test for this inspection. That program ended statewide in 2000, so ignore any checklist that still lists it.

Who must come with you to the Florida road test

Two different people are often involved, and the requirements for each are different. Most families send one adult who covers both roles, but the rules are not interchangeable.

The person who drives you to the testing site and home afterward must be a licensed driver 18 or older. A learner permit does not allow you to drive alone, which means you cannot legally arrive by yourself even on the morning of your exam. Passing the test does not change that until the license is actually issued.

The person who certifies your driving experience must be a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult 21 or older, and this applies only to applicants under 18. If that adult cannot be present, they can complete the Parental Consent and Certification of Driving Experience form in advance and send it with you.

Whoever comes along waits in the designated area. Only the examiner rides in the car during the exam, with no exceptions for nervous parents.

Extra documents for Florida road test applicants under 18

Minors carry a heavier paperwork load than adult applicants, and the forms have signature rules that catch families off guard.

Certification of Minor Driving Experience

This form certifies 50 hours of supervised practice, including at least 10 hours after dark, and it must be signed by a parent or guardian. Examiners do not audit your log, but they do require the signature, and an unsigned form is the single most common reason a teen appointment gets rescheduled.

Parental Consent Form and Parent Proctoring Form

Unmarried applicants under 18 need a signed Parental Consent Form. If you completed the Class E Knowledge Exam online rather than in person, a parent or guardian also signs a Parent Proctoring Form confirming they supervised the session. Both forms have to be signed in front of a driver license examiner or a notary public, so do not sign them at the kitchen table the night before.

12-month conviction-free learner license requirement

You must be at least 16 and have held your learner permit for 12 months without a traffic conviction. One violation can be forgiven if you complete a Basic Driver Improvement course, but two will reset your eligibility. Married or legally emancipated minors skip parental consent entirely and instead present a marriage certificate or the emancipation court order.

What drivers 18 and older bring to the Florida road test

Adult applicants skip the parental forms and the 12-month waiting period. You can complete the learner license requirements and upgrade straight to a Class E license in a single sequence, provided you pass the knowledge exam and the vision and hearing screening.

New adult drivers must complete the Driver Education Traffic Safety course, the four-hour program covering traffic law and the legal consequences of impaired driving. The older TLSAE course counts in place of DETS only if it was finished before August 1, 2025 and less than a year ago. Applicants who already hold or previously held a license from another state or an exempt country are excused from both the course and the written exam, and taking the Class E Knowledge Exam in person is often the faster route for everyone else.

Online Driver License and ID Card Application to submit before your appointment

Florida requires an electronic application for driver license transactions, and it has to be submitted before you arrive. Do not print it. Staff pull up your submission during the appointment, and completed applications stay valid for 90 days.

Florida road test fees and how to pay them

At a tax collector office, you are not paying for the drive itself. You are paying to upgrade your learner license to a Class E license, plus any retake or service charges that apply. Fees are collected at the counter before the transaction is processed.

Offices accept cash, checks, debit cards, and credit cards. Debit payments carry a flat $2.75 processing fee, and credit payments carry 2.75% with a $2.75 minimum. Those charges go to the payment processor, not the county. Third-party testing centers set their own pricing for the exam itself, so confirm the total with your provider before test day rather than assuming county rates apply.

Florida road test retake fee and rescheduling rules

A retake costs $20 per attempt and must be paid before the examiner administers the second exam. You get one attempt per day. If you disqualify, the examiner explains what went wrong and you book a new appointment for a different date, and the examiner's decision on your performance is final.

One clarification worth making, because competing guides get it wrong constantly: the $10 charge people mention online is the retest fee for the Class E Knowledge Exam, not the driving test. The written exam is free the first time. The driving retake is $20.

Skills the examiner scores on the Florida road test

The exam is a normal drive through traffic near the testing site, not a closed course, and there are no trick instructions. You will be asked to perform a defined set of maneuvers:

• Approach of a crossing in the proper lane
• Backing roughly 50 feet while looking to the rear
• Following at a safe distance using the four-second rule
• Observing right of way for pedestrians and emergency vehicles
• Obeying stop signs with a complete stop before the crosswalk
• Obeying traffic signals
• Passing on the left
