Who Can Take the Florida Online DMV Exam
Florida allows the Class E Knowledge Exam to be taken online only by applicants under the age of 18. Once you turn 18, the FLHSMV requires you to test in person at a driver license office, with no online option.
Age rules for the permit test
You can start the DETS course at 14 and a half, and many teens do exactly that so the paperwork is finished before their birthday. You must be at least 15 years old to apply for the learner's license itself. Passing the knowledge exam before you turn 15 is fine, since the score stays on file with the state.
What you need to register
Have your legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number ready. Applicants without an SSN can register with an Alien Registration Number or USCIS number. The identity check happens during registration, so the name you enter has to match your official documents exactly.
If you are 18 or older
Adults testing for the first time take the 4-hour TLSAE course instead of DETS, and they sit the Class E Knowledge Exam in person. PalmWay is an authorized third party testing center, so adults in Miami-Dade and Broward can take that exam with us instead of waiting for a state appointment.

Road signs trip up more students than road rules do. There are only five sign questions, but missing three of them puts real pressure on the rest of the test.
Why the DETS Course Comes First
Since August 1, 2025, every first-time applicant under 18 must complete the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety course before receiving a learner's license. The 4-hour TLSAE course is no longer accepted for minors. The only exception applies to teens who finished TLSAE before August 1, 2025 and apply for their permit within one year of that completion date.
The order matters in practice. The state verifies your DETS completion when you apply at the driver license office, so take the 6-hour DETS course first, then the knowledge exam, then book your office visit. Both courses are online and you can start and stop whenever you want.

How to Take the DMV Written Test Online in Florida
- Register and pay. Complete the form on this page and pay $29.95.
- Verify your identity. Enter your Social Security number or USCIS number when prompted.
- Run the practice test. Unlimited attempts, no score sent anywhere.
- Launch the official exam. Do it when your parent or legal guardian can sit with you for the full hour.
- Get your result on screen. Pass or fail is immediate, and passing scores upload to the FLHSMV automatically.
- Book your driver license office appointment. Walk-ins are rarely practical in Miami-Dade or Broward.
- Bring your documents and the signed Parent Proctoring Form. The form is notarized or signed in front of the examiner.
- Pass the vision and hearing tests. Vision must be 20/40 or better in each eye, with or without corrective lenses.
- Receive your learner's license. Same visit, in most offices.
Parent Proctoring Rules During the Exam
A parent or legal guardian must be physically present for the entire exam and acts as the proctor. No notes, no handbook, no phone, no coaching from the person watching. Florida treats the proctored exam as an official state test, and the certification your parent signs says exactly that.
The Parent Proctoring Form has to be signed in the presence of a driver license examiner or notarized ahead of time if the parent will not be at the office. Forgetting this form is the single most common reason teens get turned away after passing the test.
The FLHSMV also reserves the right to randomly select students who passed online and require an in-person retest. There is no charge for it, and it is not a sign that anything went wrong.
Retake Rules If You Fail the Online Permit Test
Your purchase covers one attempt at the official exam. Florida permits up to three online attempts total, and each attempt after the first carries an additional fee. Burn through all three and you have to finish the process at a driver license office.
The practice test is unlimited and separate. Practice results are never reported to the state, so there is no downside to running it four or five times until you are consistently scoring above 90%. Roughly half of first-time candidates fail the real knowledge exam statewide, and almost all of them skipped this step.

One policy change worth knowing before you plan around a language preference. As of February 6, 2026, knowledge and driving exams administered in Florida driver license offices are given in English only, and translation devices and interpreters are no longer permitted. What You Can and Cannot Do With a Learner's License
Passing the exam gets you a permit, not a license. Florida's graduated licensing rules apply from day one.
- Hold the permit for 12 months with no moving violations, or until you turn 18
- Log 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours after dark
- Drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat
- Daylight only for the first three months, then until 10 p.m.
Sixteen-year-olds with a full license still cannot drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they are going to work or driving with a licensed adult. For 17-year-olds the window is 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Those restrictions lift automatically at 18.
