Ready for Test Day

Feel calm and confident on test day.

Getting your Florida driver license at the Northside office means passing the Class E Driving Skills Test that starts at 7900 NW 27th Ave, Miami, FL 33147 — the state driver license service center inside the Northside Shopping Center at NW 27th Ave and NW 79th St. This page explains where the test begins, what the streets of this part of northwest Miami look like, what your car must pass, which documents to bring, and how PalmWay Driving School can bring a test-ready car with an instructor to your Northside appointment.

Where the Road Test Takes Place at Northside

The Northside road test is given at a state driver license office in Miami-Dade County: the Northside Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center, 7900 NW 27th Ave, Miami, FL 33147, phone 305-375-5448. The office is open Monday through Friday 8:00am–5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am–1:00pm. It sits inside the Northside Shopping Center, a large retail plaza on the west side of NW 27th Ave just north of NW 79th St, a short walk from the Northside Metrorail station. You book your driving test yourself through the FLHSMV online appointment system — not through a driving school. On the day of the test the examiner meets you in the parking lot, inspects the vehicle, and starts the drive from there.

📍

State Driver License Office

Northside is a state (FLHSMV) driver license service center in Miami-Dade County. Driving tests are by appointment only, booked through the FLHSMV online appointment system, with weekday and Saturday morning slots.

Arrive 10 Min Early

Be in the lot at least 10 minutes before your slot. NW 27th Ave and NW 79th St are both busy corridors, so leave a margin for traffic. Late arrivals lose the appointment and must rebook.

🅿️

Shopping Center Lot Start

The examiner comes out to your car in the Northside Shopping Center parking area near the driver license office, checks the vehicle, and the test begins right there in the lot.

What the Roads Look Like Around Northside

The Northside road test uses the local residential streets and main roads around the shopping center in the West Little River and Gladeview area of northwest Miami. The whole test lasts about 15–20 minutes. There is no official published route, but the examiner usually stays on the streets close to the office. This is an older, flat urban neighborhood: a dense grid of single-family blocks with two-way stop signs, a couple of wide divided arterials with bus stops and Metrorail columns in the median, corner stores, churches and schools every few blocks, and steady local traffic rather than high-speed suburban roads. You will not drive on I-95, the Airport Expressway (SR 112), or the Gratigny Parkway (SR 924) — highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test.

🛣️ Main Roads Near the Office

  • NW 27th Ave (SR 9) — the divided arterial in front of the office, with the elevated Metrorail guideway above its median
  • NW 79th St (SR 934) — the main east-west corridor at the south edge of the shopping center
  • NW 62nd St (Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd) — about a mile south
  • NW 95th St — about a mile north, with school zones
  • NW 32nd Ave and NW 17th Ave — the north-south streets that frame the residential grid on either side of the office

🚦 Speed Limits to Know

Residential blocks 25–30 mph
Main corridors 35–40 mph
Test duration 15–20 min

🚫 No highway driving — I-95, the Airport Expressway (SR 112), the Gratigny Parkway (SR 924) and the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) are NOT part of the Class E road test at Northside.

Common Mistakes at the Northside Road Test

Most applicants who fail at Northside can drive perfectly well. They lose points on small, fixable habits that the streets around NW 27th Ave and NW 79th St expose very quickly — a stop that is not quite complete, a lane picked too late, a speed that crept up with the traffic. Here is what our instructors see most often on this side of Miami.

🛑 Rolling Stops on the Residential Grid

The number-one failure point. The numbered streets between NW 27th Ave and NW 17th Ave — NW 80th St, NW 83rd St, NW 87th St and their neighbors — are a tight grid of two-way stops. The examiner watches for the wheels to stop moving completely behind the line, every single time.

🔀 Lane Choice on NW 27th Ave

NW 27th Ave is a divided road with several through lanes and left-turn pockets at the signalized openings in the median. Drifting into the wrong lane before a turn, or turning from a through lane, costs points — pick your lane early and signal well ahead of the intersection.

🏫 Speed Control Near School Zones

This part of Miami has many schools within a few blocks of the office, including Miami Central Senior High on NW 95th St and several elementary schools on the side streets. If your test falls during school hours, flashing school-zone limits apply and exceeding them counts against you.

🪞 Improper Mirror Checks

Changing lanes on NW 79th St without a visible mirror and shoulder check is marked down every time. The examiner is looking at your eyes and head movement, not just at where the car ends up.

🚗 Speed Drift on NW 79th St

NW 79th St carries steady traffic, and drivers tend to follow the flow rather than the posted sign. Keep an eye on the speedometer — riding along at the speed of the car ahead is not a defense if it is over the limit.

🅿️ Leaving the Shopping Center Lot

The test starts in a busy retail parking area shared with shoppers, delivery vans and Metrorail commuters. Rushing the exit onto NW 27th Ave or NW 79th St without a full stop, a signal and a proper gap is an easy way to lose points in the first minute.

Vehicle Requirements for the Northside Road Test

Before you drive a single foot, the state examiner walks around your car in the Northside lot and checks it. If any item fails, the test is cancelled on the spot and you lose the appointment.

One Important Thing About Your Florida License

If you pass your road test at Northside in an automatic-transmission car, Florida still lets you legally drive a manual-transmission car afterward. The state does not restrict your license according to the type of vehicle you tested in.

Some other states do it differently. In Florida, whatever car you bring on test day, your Class E license covers both automatic and manual vehicles.

Yes. PalmWay provides a fully insured, inspection-ready car with an instructor for your already-scheduled Northside appointment, starting at $90 for the car only or $140 with a 1-hour warm-up lesson. We do not schedule the test for you and we do not conduct it — the state examiner does.

How do I book a road test at the Northside office?

Northside is a state driver license office in Miami-Dade County, so you book through the FLHSMV online appointment system and select the Northside Driver License & Motor Vehicle Service Center at 7900 NW 27th Ave. Walk-ins are not accepted for driving tests. Does Northside give road tests on Saturday?

Where do I park for the test at Northside?

The office is inside the Northside Shopping Center, so you use the shopping center's own parking lot — enter from NW 27th Ave or NW 79th St and park near the driver license entrance. The lot is shared with store customers and Metrorail commuters, so arrive early enough to find a space close to the office where the examiner can reach your car.

There is no official published route, but the examiner typically stays within a few blocks of the office: NW 27th Ave, NW 79th St, and the residential grid of numbered streets between NW 32nd Ave and NW 17th Ave, occasionally reaching toward NW 62nd St or NW 95th St. Expect two-way stop signs, a divided arterial with left-turn pockets, and school zones.

Is I-95 or the Airport Expressway part of the Northside road test?

No. The standard Class E test stays on local streets. I-95, SR 112, the Gratigny Parkway and the Palmetto Expressway are all nearby but are never included.

How soon can I retest at Northside if I fail?

Florida requires a waiting period before you can retest. Check the current state waiting period when you reschedule through the FLHSMV appointment system — you can pick Northside again or any other Miami-Dade office that gives driving tests.

If I test in an automatic at Northside, can I drive a manual afterward?

Yes. Florida issues a standard Class E license regardless of the transmission you used on test day. Both manual and automatic cars are covered.
