Arrive 10 Min Early
Be there at least 10 minutes before your reserved time. Late arrivals forfeit the reservation and must book a new one.
Parking Lot Start
The examiner comes out to your car, inspects it, and begins the test from the parking area. Downtown parking is tighter than at suburban offices, so allow extra minutes.
What the Roads Look Like in Downtown West Palm Beach
The examiner usually stays on the streets around the Governmental Center: the downtown grid along N Olive Ave and N Dixie Hwy, connectors such as Banyan Blvd and Quadrille Blvd, and the residential blocks just north of downtown. The whole test takes about 15–20 minutes. You will not drive on I-95, Florida's Turnpike or the Beeline Hwy (SR 710) — highway driving is not part of the standard Class E road test.

🚦 Speed Limits to Know
🚫 No highway driving — I-95 (about a mile west of the office), Florida's Turnpike and the Beeline Hwy (SR 710) are NOT part of the Class E road test. Expect downtown streets, one-way blocks and pedestrian crossings instead.
Common Mistakes at the West Palm Beach Road Test
Most candidates who fail downtown can drive well — they lose points on small, fixable details that the West Palm Beach street layout tends to expose.
🛑 Rolling Stops on the Residential Grid
The most common failure. The numbered streets north of Banyan Blvd and the blocks around Tamarind Ave are full of stop signs, and the examiner watches for a full stop at each one. The wheels must stop turning completely — a slow creep counts as a rolling stop.
↩️ One-Way Streets and Lane Choice Downtown
Downtown West Palm Beach has one-way blocks — stretches of Datura St and Evernia St, for example — and multi-lane connectors such as Quadrille Blvd and Okeechobee Blvd with dedicated turn lanes. Read the signs before every turn and pick your lane early; a wrong-way entry or a last-second lane change is an immediate deduction.
🚶 Pedestrians and School Zones
Crosswalks around Clematis St and the Governmental Center see steady foot traffic, and the Dreyfoos School of the Arts campus on S Sapodilla Ave is a school zone. During school hours the reduced limit applies, and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is scored heavily.
🪞 Improper Mirror Checks
Skipping mirror and shoulder checks before lane changes and turns is marked down every time. The examiner watches your eyes and head movement, not only where the car ends up — make the checks visible.

⚠️ Low-speed vehicles with a top speed of 20–25 mph are not accepted for the Class E test. If any inspection item fails, the examiner will not start the test.

One Important Thing About Your Florida License
If you pass your road test in West Palm Beach in an automatic-transmission car, Florida still lets you legally drive a manual-transmission car afterward. The state does not restrict your license according to the kind of vehicle you tested in.
Some other states do it differently. In Florida, whatever car you bring on test day, your Class E license covers both automatic and manual vehicles.

The standard Class E test stays on local streets; I-95, Florida's Turnpike and SR 710 are not included. Around this office the examiner typically uses the downtown grid — N Olive Ave, N Dixie Hwy, Banyan Blvd, Quadrille Blvd and nearby residential blocks. Busy arterials like Okeechobee Blvd may be crossed or used briefly, but there is no fixed official route.
How soon can I retest if I fail?

If I test in an automatic, can I drive a manual car afterward?
Yes. Florida issues the same standard Class E license no matter which transmission you used on test day. Automatic and manual vehicles are both covered.
