Learning to Drive in Miami Beach
Miami Beach sits between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and that shapes how you learn to drive here. Getting to the mainland usually means a causeway. Inside the city you deal with crowded crosswalks in South Beach, the one-way split of Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive in Mid-Beach, and the 71st Street approach to Normandy Isle in North Beach. PalmWay lessons are built around the streets you will drive every day after you pass.
PalmWay has no office or classroom on the island: your instructor comes to you, at home, at school or at work, anywhere from South Pointe to the Surfside line. One local fact matters from the first day: the driver license office at 100 16th Street in South Beach does not give driving exams, so your road test will take place on the mainland. We plan your lessons with that drive in mind.
How Lessons Work in Miami Beach
Pick-up and drop-off
Every lesson starts and ends where you are: a house on Normandy Isle, a condo on Collins Avenue, Miami Beach Senior High after class, or your job near Lincoln Road. If your building has a valet lane or a guard gate, tell us where to wait.
60 minutes, one-on-one
Each lesson is a full hour behind the wheel, one instructor and one student, in the instructor's car.
7 days, 8 AM to 7 PM
Lessons run every day of the week. If your learner's license is less than three months old, Florida allows daylight driving only, so in the winter months we book you earlier in the day.
A plan that fits the island
Early lessons stay on residential streets. Later ones add Alton Road, 41st Street, the one-way section of Collins Avenue and, when you are ready, a causeway to the mainland.
Who We Teach in Miami Beach
Teens with a learner's license
For students at Miami Beach Senior High and other teens 15 to 17. Lessons add structured practice on top of the 50 supervised hours a parent certifies, with extra time on the maneuvers the driving test checks.
Teen driving lessonsAdults getting a first license
At 18 or older there is no 12-month waiting period. Once you hold a learner's license, you can work toward the driving skills test at your own pace.
Nervous and returning drivers
Haven't driven in years, or does Collins Avenue traffic make you tense? We start on residential side streets and add one new challenge at a time: a left turn on 41st Street, a lane change on Alton Road, then a causeway.
New to Florida or licensed abroad
If you learned to drive in another country, the basic skills are there. What changes is Florida right-of-way, school zones and the test format.
Lessons for foreign license holdersMiami Beach Roads You Will Practice On
The city has three distinct parts, and each teaches something different. Your instructor picks streets based on where you live and what you need next.
South Beach
Everything south of Dade Boulevard and 24th Street. Alton Road is the main north-south street on the west side, running from the Miami Beach Marina area south of 5th Street all the way up to 63rd Street. Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue run parallel to Ocean Drive and stay busy with people on foot, especially in season.
Lincoln Road, between 16th and 17th Streets, is a pedestrian mall, so the blocks around it are a lesson in scanning crosswalks. 5th Street carries A1A west to the MacArthur Causeway.
Mid-Beach
Bayshore, Nautilus and the oceanfront blocks up to 63rd Street. 41st Street, also called Arthur Godfrey Road, is a four-lane, palm-lined shopping street that begins where I-195 ends at Alton Road. At 41st Street, A1A is split: Collins Avenue carries northbound traffic and Indian Creek Drive carries southbound traffic along the waterway.
North Bay Road and the quiet side streets off Pine Tree Drive are residential and work well for early lessons. Farther north, Alton Road passes Mount Sinai Medical Center.
North Beach
From 63rd Street to 87th Terrace at the Surfside line, plus Normandy Isle, Normandy Shores and Biscayne Point. 71st Street and Normandy Drive form a one-way pair across Normandy Isle and lead to the John F. Kennedy Causeway.
Many streets on Normandy Isle carry French names, such as Rue Versailles and Marseille Drive, and its residential blocks are a good place to practice turns and full stops. Biscayne Point is reached from 77th and 85th Streets.
The Causeways: Your Link to the Mainland
Four causeways connect Miami Beach to the mainland across Biscayne Bay, and each one feels different. We add them once your basics are solid.
| Causeway | Where it meets Miami Beach | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|
| MacArthur Causeway (A1A) | 5th Street, South Beach | Six lanes over the bay past Watson Island, then I-395 and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836), the route to the Miami Central exam office. |
| Venetian Causeway | Dade Boulevard and 17th Street | A crossing over the Venetian Islands with two drawbridges and a toll plaza on Biscayne Island, popular with joggers and cyclists. |
| Julia Tuttle Causeway (I-195) | Alton Road and 41st Street | Interstate speeds and a connection to I-95: highway practice once you merge with confidence. |
| John F. Kennedy Causeway (79th Street, SR 934) | 71st Street and Normandy Drive | Runs through North Bay Village and has two drawbridges. It is the direct route to the Northside exam office. |
What Makes Driving in Miami Beach Different
People on foot
Crosswalks fill up fast around Lincoln Road, Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue. The Florida driving test checks that you let pedestrians cross, and in South Beach you practice that on almost every block.
One-way splits
Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive at 41st Street, and 71st Street and Normandy Drive on Normandy Isle, split traffic by direction. You learn to choose your lane early and plan a loop if you miss a turn.
Drawbridges
The Venetian and John F. Kennedy causeways each have two drawbridges. When the gates come down, you stop behind the line and wait. We practice the approach so an opening never catches you off guard.
School zones
Expect reduced speed limits at posted times near Miami Beach Senior High (Prairie Avenue at Dade Boulevard), Nautilus Middle (4301 North Michigan Avenue), North Beach Elementary (4100 Prairie Avenue) and Biscayne Beach Elementary (800 77th Street).
King tides
King tides usually arrive in September, October and November and can leave water on low-lying streets. The City of Miami Beach advises drivers to avoid driving through flood waters. We teach the same: turn around and find another way.
Tight parking
Many blocks are metered or part of residential parking zones. Parallel parking is not on the FLHSMV list of test maneuvers, but you will need it here, so we practice it along with the straight-in parking the test does include.
🚌 Trolleys and buses: the city's free trolley runs every day from South Beach to North Beach, and county buses stop often. You learn to keep a safe gap and change lanes only when the next lane is clear.

Miami Beach Driving Lessons: Questions and Answers
Can I take my driving test in Miami Beach?
No. FLHSMV lists the office at 100 16th Street as having no driving exams. The closest exam offices are Miami Central, about 10 miles from South Beach, and Northside, about 8 miles from North Beach. Miami Gardens is another option from North Beach.
Do you pick up on the islands and in North Beach?
Yes. We pick up anywhere in Miami Beach you can reach by car, including the Venetian Islands, Normandy Isle and Biscayne Point. If your street or building has a guard gate, let the guard know your instructor is coming.
Will lessons include the causeways or I-195?
When you are ready, yes. Highway driving is not on the FLHSMV list of test maneuvers, but most drives to the mainland use a causeway, so we add them once turns, stops and lane changes feel natural.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your starting point. A complete beginner needs more time than someone refreshing old skills. After the first lesson your instructor tells you plainly what is left, and you can add lessons whenever you need them.
My teen goes to Miami Beach Senior High. Can lessons start at school?
Yes. We can pick your teen up at school or at home and drop them off after the lesson, any day between 8 AM and 7 PM, within the daylight rule for new learner's licenses.
Can I use your car for the road test?
Yes. Car for Road Test is $90 and you meet us at the test location; Car + Pick-up is $140. Book the FLHSMV appointment yourself and send us the office, date and time.
I have a license from another country. What do I need?
Requirements depend on your situation, so confirm with FLHSMV which exams apply to you. Remember that the Class E knowledge exam is offered in English only. Our lessons focus on Florida rules and on the skills the examiner checks.
