Learning to Drive in Olympia Heights
Olympia Heights is the unincorporated neighborhood between Bird Road and Miller Drive, from SW 102nd Avenue east to the Palmetto Expressway, about 11 miles west-southwest of downtown Miami. It is home to Tropical Park and Southwest Miami Senior High, and most of it is a residential grid of numbered streets, terraces and courts. That gives a new driver slow side streets for the first lessons, with six-lane Bird Road and the Palmetto a few minutes away when you are ready.
PalmWay Driving School gives one-on-one, 60-minute lessons with pick-up and drop-off at your home, school or work in Olympia Heights. This guide covers the local roads, the spots that trouble beginners, the closest road test offices, prices and the steps to a Florida license.

Who We Teach in Olympia Heights
🎓 Teens with a learner's license
Teens at Southwest Miami Senior High and other nearby schools can be picked up at home or at school. Lessons work alongside the 50 supervised hours, 10 at night, that a parent or guardian certifies, and parents can repeat the same streets during the week.
Driving lessons for teenagers🚗 Adults getting a first license
If you are 18 or older and never got a license, lessons start with seat and mirror setup, braking and turns, then build up to Bird Road and the skills test. Adults take TLSAE and the knowledge exam but skip the 12-month learner's period teens have.
😌 Nervous and returning drivers
Have a license but avoid the Palmetto? Refresher lessons start on the side streets west of Galloway Road and move to busier roads one step at a time.
🌎 New to Florida or licensed abroad
Drivers who learned in another country often handle a car well but not Florida's rules: right of way at four-way stops, school zones and what the skills test checks.
Drivers with a foreign licenseGetting to Know Olympia Heights
Olympia Heights is a census-designated place in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Bird Road (SW 40th Street) is the north edge, with Westchester across the road. SW 102nd Avenue is the west edge, with Westwood Lakes beyond. Miller Drive (SW 56th Street) is the south edge, with Sunset on the other side. The Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) separates it from Glenvar Heights, and east of Galloway Road the line dips south to the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874).
Galloway Road (SW 87th Avenue) splits the neighborhood. West of it is the larger residential grid with Southwest Miami Senior High and Blue Lakes Elementary. East of it are more homes and Tropical Park, a 275-acre county park on the old Tropical Park Race Track grounds. Census figures put the area at about 2.7 square miles of land and a third of a square mile of water, including the park's four lakes.
| ZIP codes | 33165 for most addresses, 33155 on the Tropical Park side, 33143 below Miller Drive east of Galloway |
| Main roads | Bird Road, Galloway Road, Miller Drive, SW 97th Avenue |
| Expressways | Palmetto (SR 826) and Don Shula (SR 874) at the east edge |
| Public high school | Southwest Miami Senior High, 8855 SW 50th Terrace |
| Closest road test office | Midway Crossings, about 4 miles north |
Local Roads You Will Practice On
From calmest to busiest, these are the roads that shape lessons in Olympia Heights.
| Road | What it is like | What you work on |
|---|---|---|
| Side streets west of Galloway (SW 41st to SW 55th Street and the numbered terraces and courts) | Residential, with driveways and parked cars | Starting, stopping, turns, three-point turns |
| SW 92nd Avenue, SW 97th Avenue, SW 48th Street, SW 102nd Avenue | Main neighborhood roads that feed Galloway, Bird Road and Miller Drive | Steady speed, scanning intersections |
| Galloway Road (SW 87th Avenue, SR 973) | Residential, then shopping centers at Bird Road | Lane position, following distance, left turns |
| Miller Drive (SW 56th Street) | The south edge, with Sunset across the road | Holding speed, lane changes |
| Bird Road (SW 40th Street, SR 976) | Six-lane divided road, mostly commercial | Lane choice, turns across traffic, plaza driveways |
| Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and Don Shula Expressway (SR 874) | Expressways at the east edge, entered from Bird Road | Merging, overhead signs, exits |
| Florida's Turnpike | West of the neighborhood, exit 23 at Bird Road, all-electronic tolls | Highway merging and longer drives |
Spots That Challenge New Drivers Here
🚦 Left turns on Bird Road
Bird Road is a six-lane divided road, mostly commercial. A left turn means judging a gap across three lanes of oncoming traffic while the car ahead may brake to swing into a plaza.
🛒 Bird Road at Galloway Road
Shopping centers surround this corner, so cars pull out of parking lots near the intersection and shoppers cross on foot. Check the crosswalk before every turn and stay out of the intersection when traffic backs up.
🛣️ The Palmetto interchange
At the northeast corner of Tropical Park, Bird Road meets the Palmetto Expressway, and the Don Shula Expressway begins in the same interchange. Signs for SR 826 and SR 874 come quickly, so read them early and pick your lane before the ramp.
🏫 School zones
Southwest Miami Senior High (SW 50th Terrace) and Blue Lakes Elementary (SW 52nd Terrace) are inside the neighborhood, and Olympia Heights Elementary faces Bird Road near SW 97th Avenue. Slow down early when school zone limits are in effect.
🏟️ Event days at Tropical Park
Tropical Park Stadium seats 7,000 and hosts high school football and track events, and the equestrian center hosts horse shows several times a year. Expect extra cars turning around the park on event days.
🛑 Corners inside the grid
Many corners in a numbered grid look alike, and a neighbor backing out of a driveway may not see you. Full stops before the stop line and a slow left, right, left look are habits the examiner checks.
Calm Streets for First Lessons
The calm part of Olympia Heights is the grid west of Galloway Road. On the terraces and courts between SW 92nd and SW 101st Avenue you can repeat a turn several times without a line of cars behind you. A sensible order for a new driver:
Side streets: controls, smooth stops, turns, stop signs and three-point turns.
SW 97th Avenue, SW 92nd Avenue and SW 48th Street: steady speed, mirror checks, turning onto busier roads.
Galloway Road and Miller Drive: lane position, a four-second following distance, left turns at signals.
Bird Road: lane changes, turns across traffic, plaza driveways.
The Palmetto or the Turnpike: merging and exits, once your instructor sees you are ready.
Repeating these streets with a parent between lessons adds to the 50 hours of driving, 10 at night, that must be certified for a teen.

Full details are on the FLHSMV knowledge exam and driving skills test page.

Driving lessons in TamiamiOlympia Heights Driving Lessons: FAQ
Do you pick up anywhere in Olympia Heights?
Yes. Every lesson includes pick-up and drop-off at your home, school or work, from the streets around Tropical Park to SW 102nd Avenue.
Where is the closest road test office?
Midway Crossings, 7795 W Flagler St, about 4 miles north. Coral Reef (about 9 miles) and Miami Central (about 10 miles) also give driving exams. No office in Coral Gables does.
Can I use your car for the road test?
Yes. Car for Road Test is $90 (regular $110) and you meet us at the test location. Car + Pick-up is $140 (regular $170) and includes pick-up. You book the FLHSMV appointment yourself.
My teen is 15. What comes first?
The DETS course, then the knowledge exam (online is fine under 18), then vision and hearing for the learner's license. Lessons start once your teen holds the learner's license.
Can adults take the knowledge exam online?
No. FLHSMV allows the online Class E knowledge exam only for applicants under 18, so adults take it in person after the TLSAE course.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on where you start. A first-time driver needs more time on side streets than someone who only wants to get comfortable on the Palmetto. Packages do not expire, so you can start small and add lessons.
Do you have an office in Olympia Heights?
No, the instructor comes to you. PalmWay's office is at 3325 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 401, Hollywood, FL 33021, and the school holds Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218 issued by FLHSMV. See our license.
