Kendall is not a city. It is an unincorporated part of Miami-Dade County about 14 miles southwest of downtown Miami, and on census maps it stretches from US-1 at Dadeland west to Florida's Turnpike. In everyday speech the name also covers West Kendall: Kendale Lakes, Kendall West, The Hammocks, The Crossings, Three Lakes and Country Walk. We teach across all of it, and in Richmond West just to the south.

PalmWay Driving School holds Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218, issued by FLHSMV (see our license). We have no office or classroom in Kendall: your instructor picks you up at home, school or work, gives you a one-on-one 60-minute lesson behind the wheel, and drops you off afterward.

How a Kendall Lesson Works

📍

We come to you

Every lesson starts and ends at the addresses you give us: a house in Kendale Lakes, Felix Varela Senior High after the last bell, or an office near Dadeland.

⏱️

A full hour, one-on-one

Each lesson is 60 minutes behind the wheel with only you and your instructor in the car.

📅

8 AM to 7 PM, every day

Lessons run 7 days a week, so they fit around school, shift work and weekend plans.

🚗

No car needed

You learn in the instructor's car, so you do not need a car of your own to start.

Who Learns With Us in Kendall

🎒 Teens with a learner's license

Teens 15 to 17 start once they hold a learner's license. Lessons add structure to the 50 supervised hours required before the test and polish the maneuvers the driving skills test scores. Teen driving lessons

🚘 Adults getting a first license

At 18 and over there is no 12-month learner period: after TLSAE, the knowledge exam and the vision and hearing test, you can take the driving skills test when ready. We build that readiness from side streets up to Kendall Drive. Adult lessons and first-time drivers

😌 Nervous or returning drivers

Maybe you hold a license but avoid the Turnpike, or you have not driven in years. We start where you feel safe and add traffic only when you are ready. Nervous drivers and refresher lessons

🌎 Foreign license holders

Florida waives its exams only for licenses from a short list (Canada, France, South Korea, Taiwan, and the driving test for Germany). Other foreign license holders take the knowledge exam and the driving skills test, in English only since February 6, 2026. Lessons for foreign license holders

From Side Streets to the Turnpike: Kendall Roads

Kendall sits on the Miami-Dade grid: numbered streets run east and west, numbered avenues north and south, and the short roads between them are terraces, lanes, courts and places. That makes it easy to step lessons up one level at a time.

Step 1: quiet residential streets

First lessons stay close to home. The Crossings, between Kendall Drive and SW 120th Street west of the Turnpike, has a web of short residential terraces and lanes, and central Kendall has two-lane Kendale Boulevard near SW 107th Avenue. Next come divided boulevards with two lanes each way, such as Hammocks Boulevard between SW 147th and SW 152nd Avenues and Kendale Lakes Boulevard (SW 82nd Street). Unless posted otherwise, Florida's residential speed limit is 30 mph.

Step 2: the big arterials

Kendall Drive (SW 88th Street, State Road 94) is six lanes for most of its run through Kendall, with major intersections at SW 137th Avenue, SW 107th Avenue and Galloway Road (SW 87th Avenue). Killian Parkway (SW 104th Street) is six lanes west of the Don Shula Expressway, then narrows to two lanes as Killian Drive on its way to US-1. Here you learn lane choice, steady speed and left turns at wide signals.

Step 3: US-1 and Dadeland

US-1 (South Dixie Highway) forms Kendall's eastern edge. Around Dadeland, Metrorail runs overhead with the Dadeland North and Dadeland South stations, Dadeland Mall lines the north side of Kendall Drive for about half a mile east of the Palmetto, and the Palmetto Expressway begins at US-1 just south of Dadeland South. Expect buses and pedestrians near the stations.

Step 4: expressways, when you are ready

The Don Shula Expressway (State Road 874) is a 7-mile toll road from the Turnpike to the Palmetto, with exits at Killian Parkway, Kendall Drive and SW 128th Street. The Turnpike's Homestead Extension serves the area at Coral Reef Drive (Exit 16), SW 120th Street (Exit 19) and Kendall Drive (Exit 20). Both are all-electronic: no booths, no cash. Practice covers merging up to highway speed, a four-second following distance and planning your exit early.

Kendall Traffic Situations We Practice on Purpose

🚧

Busway gate arms

South of Dadeland, the South Dade TransitWay busway runs beside US-1 to Florida City, and Miami-Dade has installed railroad-style gate arms at many of its intersections. If a gate arm is coming down, stop. Go only when it is fully up and the lights are off.

↩️

Left turns across six lanes

Turning left off Kendall Drive or Killian Parkway means judging gaps across three lanes of oncoming traffic, or waiting for the arrow. We practice the waiting as much as the turn.

🚌

School buses on divided roads

On an undivided two-way road, even a wide one, traffic in both directions stops for a school bus showing its stop signal. On a road divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, oncoming traffic does not stop. Painted lines do not count.

🛣️

Rush hour west of the Turnpike

West Kendall reaches the Turnpike through a few interchanges (Bird Road, Kendall Drive, SW 120th Street and Coral Reef Drive), so those roads fill up at rush hour. We practice picking a lane early instead of reacting late.

School Zones Around Kendall High Schools

Many lessons start or end at a school, so school zones come up early. Florida's standard school zone limit is 20 mph during posted times or while the beacons flash, and holding a phone while driving through one is illegal. The main public high schools in the area:

School Address Area
Miami Killian Senior High 10655 SW 97th Ave, Miami, FL 33176 Central Kendall
TERRA Environmental Research Institute (magnet) 11005 SW 84th St, Miami, FL 33173 North of Kendall Drive
Miami Sunset Senior High 13125 SW 72nd St, Miami, FL 33183 Kendale Lakes
Felix Varela Senior High 15255 SW 96th St, Miami, FL 33196 The Hammocks

Speed cameras matter too. Florida law lets counties and cities use speed cameras in school zones, and on school days they can ticket drivers going more than 10 mph over the limit. Middle and K-8 schools have school zones as well, such as Hammocks Middle School on Hammocks Boulevard and Devon Aire K-8 Center on SW 122nd Avenue, so we practice spotting school zone signs early.

Your Path to a Florida License

Teens 15 to 17

  1. 1. Take the 6-hour DETS course online.
  2. 2. Pass the Class E knowledge exam (50 questions, 40 correct to pass). Under 18 you can take it online with a parent as proctor.
  3. 3. At a driver license office, pass the vision and hearing test, show your documents and parental consent, and get the learner's license.
  4. 4. Drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat: daylight only for the first 3 months, then until 10 PM.
  5. 5. Hold the learner's license 12 months (or until 18) without moving violation convictions, and log 50 hours, 10 at night, certified by a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older.
  6. 6. Pass the driving skills test. At 16 you may then drive from 6 AM to 11 PM and at 17 from 5 AM to 1 AM, unless driving to or from work or with a licensed driver 21 or older.

Adults 18 and over

  1. 1. Never held a license in any state or country? Take the 4-hour TLSAE course online.
  2. 2. Pass the Class E knowledge exam in person (the online exam is only for applicants under 18), plus the vision and hearing test.
  3. 3. For a first license, bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two documents with your Florida address.
  4. 4. Practice until the maneuvers feel routine. There is no 12-month holding period at 18 and over.
  5. 5. Take the driving skills test in a registered, insured car that passes a basic inspection, or in our road test car.

Rules change, so check the FLHSMV licensing requirements before your office visit.

Questions From Kendall Drivers and Parents

Do you have an office or classroom in Kendall?

No. Our licensed location is in Dania Beach and our office is at 3325 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 401, Hollywood, FL 33021. In Kendall, the instructor comes to you.

Can the instructor pick my teen up at school?

Yes. Pick-up and drop-off can be at home, school or work in Kendall, so a lesson can start at Miami Killian, Miami Sunset or Felix Varela and end at home. Give us both addresses when you book.

Which exam office is closest to me?

For The Hammocks, Kendall West, The Crossings and Kendale Lakes, the Kendall office on SW 147th Avenue is nearest. Coral Reef on SW 122nd Avenue, inside Three Lakes, is usually closer for Three Lakes, Country Walk, Richmond West and central Kendall around Miami Killian. Near Dadeland, Midway Crossings is about 6.5 miles away.

Will my teen drive on the Turnpike or the Don Shula?

Only once the basics are solid. Highway practice comes after residential streets and arterials like Kendall Drive, starting with simple merges and exits.

Can I take the road test in Spanish?

No. Since February 6, 2026, Florida gives all driver license knowledge and driving skills exams in English only, and interpreters or other translation services are no longer allowed.

I have a license from another country. Do I need TLSAE?

FLHSMV requires TLSAE only if you have never held a license in any state, country or jurisdiction, or do not have it with you. You still take both exams unless your license is from Canada (and you surrender it), France, South Korea or Taiwan; a German license waives only the driving test. A vision exam is always required.

My teen just got a learner's license. Is a 6 PM lesson OK?

For the first three months a learner's license allows daylight driving only, so in fall and winter choose a slot that ends before sunset. After that, learners may drive until 10 PM, so our whole 8 AM to 7 PM schedule works.
