Learning to Drive in Cutler Bay
Cutler Bay fits a lot of different driving into about 10 square miles. The town runs from Eureka Drive (SW 184th Street) south to around SW 232nd Street, and from the US-1 busway east to Biscayne National Park. Inside those lines you will find quiet residential blocks in Saga Bay, Bel-Aire and Lakes by the Bay, the historic Old Cutler Road, shopping traffic around Southland Mall, and two exits of Florida's Turnpike. For a new driver that variety is useful, as long as it comes in the right order.
PalmWay Driving School teaches one-on-one, 60-minute behind-the-wheel lessons all over Cutler Bay. Your instructor picks you up and drops you off for every lesson, seven days a week from 8 AM to 7 PM. This guide covers local roads, nearby road test offices, licensing steps and prices.

How Lessons Work in Cutler Bay
Pick-up and drop-off
Each lesson starts and ends at the address you choose in Cutler Bay: home in Saga Bay or Cutler Ridge, Cutler Bay Senior High after classes, or work near Southland Mall.
60 minutes, one-on-one
A full hour behind the wheel of the instructor's car, with only you and your instructor, so the whole lesson goes to your driving.
7 days, 8 AM to 7 PM
Weekday afternoons fit around school and work, and weekend slots help families with busy weeks.
Paced to your level
Each lesson builds on the last one. We move from quiet streets to busier roads only when your control is ready.
Teen tip: for the first three months with a learner's license, Florida allows driving in daylight only, and after that until 10 PM. Winter evenings get dark well before 7 PM, so we book new learners earlier in the day.
Who We Teach in Cutler Bay
🎒 Teens with a learner's license
Students from Cutler Bay Senior High on SW 212th Street, Miami Southridge Senior High just west of town and other schools can start once they hold a learner's license and keep practicing with a parent between lessons.

🧑 Adults getting a first license
If you are 18 or older and have never held a license anywhere, you start with the 4-hour TLSAE course, then pass the Class E knowledge exam in person and prepare for the driving skills test. Adults do not have to wait 12 months between the learner's license and the road test.

😌 Nervous or returning drivers
Maybe you have a license but avoid US-1, or you have not driven in years. We start on low-speed streets near your home and add Caribbean Boulevard, Old Cutler Road and the Turnpike only when you are ready.
🌎 New to Florida or licensed abroad
New residents must get a Florida license within 30 days of establishing residency. Depending on where your license is from, you may be able to skip one or both tests, or you may need to take both, and the Class E knowledge exam is given in English only.
Cutler Bay Roads You Will Practice On
Lessons use real local roads, starting easy and adding traffic step by step.
Residential streets
We start on residential streets, such as the blocks around Saga Lake Park (SW 198th Street and SW 83rd Avenue), Whispering Pines Park on Ridgeland Drive, Bel-Aire Park on SW 97th Avenue and Cutler Ridge Park on SW 200th Street, where lower speeds leave room for steering, smooth braking, full stops and turns.
Franjo Road
The town's Franjo Road project, between SW 184th Street and Old Cutler Road, widens it from two lanes to three, with a center turn lane, a shared-use path and new traffic signals. It is the next step for lane position, left turns from the center lane and timing at signals.
Old Cutler Road
This State Historic Highway enters town at SW 184th Street and runs southwest across Cutler Bay past SW 216th Street. Its intersection with SW 184th Street is now a roundabout, a real place to practice yielding, picking your exit and signaling out.
Caribbean Boulevard and SW 211th Street
Caribbean Boulevard links US-1 and Southland Mall with the neighborhoods to the northeast and passes Town Hall. Near the mall, the Turnpike, US-1 and SW 211th Street come together, so you practice early lane choice, turn lanes and watching for cars pulling out of parking lots.
US-1 and the busway
US-1 (South Dixie Highway) runs along the west side of town beside the South Dade TransitWay, home of the Metro Express buses. Many cross streets, such as SW 200th Street, have rail-style gate arms where they cross the busway.
Florida's Turnpike
The Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike crosses Cutler Bay with Exit 11 at SW 216th Street/Cutler Ridge Boulevard and Exit 12 at Caribbean Boulevard, then crosses US-1 at Southland Mall. Once your basics are solid, these ramps are where you learn to merge at highway speed.
Local Spots Where New Drivers Need Extra Care
🚧 Busway gate arms
The gate arms on US-1 cross streets lower to let buses through, and in rush hours Metro Express buses get priority: northbound from 6 to 9 AM, southbound from 3 to 6 PM. Treat them like railroad crossing gates. Stop before the gate when it starts to lower, never drive around it, and never stop on the busway or block the intersection.
🔄 Roundabouts
Rules from the Florida driver handbook: travel counterclockwise, yield to traffic already in the roundabout, do not stop or change lanes inside it, signal before you exit, and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. You will practice this at the roundabout where Old Cutler Road meets SW 184th Street.
🏫 School zones
Cutler Bay Senior High sits on SW 212th Street near Lakes by the Bay Park, and the town has elementary schools such as Bel-Aire, Gulfstream and Whispering Pines. Never exceed the school zone speed limit during the posted times or when the light is flashing, and follow the signals of crossing guards.
🛣️ Turnpike ramps
On the ramp, look for a gap and signal. Build speed in the acceleration lane, then merge, yielding to traffic already on the highway. Florida exit numbers match the mile markers, and Exit 11 and Exit 12 are less than a mile apart, so plan your lane early.
🌧️ Heavy rain
Cutler Bay is low and flat, and heavy rain can leave water on the streets. Wipers on means headlights on, leave extra following distance, and if a road is flooded, turn around and take another route.

Steps to a Florida Driver License
Teens (under 18)
- 1. Complete the 6-hour DETS course, built for teens 14½ to 17.
- 2. At 15 or older, pass the Class E knowledge exam (50 questions, 40 correct to pass) and the vision and hearing tests, with a signed parental consent form. Under 18, you can take the knowledge exam online with a parent as proctor.
- 3. Drive on the learner's license with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat: daylight only for the first three months, then until 10 PM. Build up 50 hours of practice, 10 of them at night.
- 4. After 12 months (or at 18), with no moving violation convictions that year, a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult over 21 certifies the 50 hours and you take the Class E driving skills test.
Adults (18 and older)
- 1. If you have never held a license from any state or country, complete the 4-hour TLSAE course.
- 2. Pass the Class E knowledge exam in person, plus the vision and hearing tests, to get your learner's license. The online exam option is only for applicants under 18.
- 3. Take lessons until the test maneuvers and local traffic feel routine.
- 4. Book your driving skills test appointment. At 18 or older there is no 12-month waiting period.
What the driving skills test checks
FLHSMV lists a three-point turn in a 20 to 40 foot space, straight-in parking, a quick stop, backing 50 feet while looking to the rear (no mirror or camera), complete stops at stop signs, signaling for the last 100 feet before a turn, a following distance of at least four seconds, yielding the right-of-way and staying in the proper lane.
What to Bring to Lessons and to the Test
📋 For every lesson

Cutler Bay Driving Lessons: Questions and Answers
Do you have an office or classroom in Cutler Bay?
No. Lessons are behind the wheel, and your instructor comes to your address in Cutler Bay. Our office is at 3325 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 401, Hollywood, FL 33021, and PalmWay holds Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218 from FLHSMV. See our license.
Which road test office is closest to Cutler Bay?
Coral Reef, at 14653 SW 122nd Ave, about 5 to 9 miles by car. Kendall and Florida City come next. The tag agency on S Dixie Highway does not give license exams.
Will I drive on US-1 and the Turnpike?
Yes, when you are ready. We build up from residential streets to Franjo Road, Old Cutler Road and Caribbean Boulevard, then US-1, the busway crossings and Turnpike merges.
Can my teen take a late afternoon lesson?
In the first three months with a learner's license, Florida allows daylight driving only, so in winter we book earlier slots. After that the limit is 10 PM, and a late winter lesson adds some practice after dark.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on where you start. A licensed driver who wants confidence on US-1 may need only a few lessons, while a complete beginner needs time at every stage. Packages do not expire, so you can use a larger package at your own pace.
Can I use your car for the road test?
Yes. Car for Road Test is $90, and Car + Pick-up is $140. Book your road test appointment first, then send us the office, date and time.
I have a driver license from another country. What do I need?
New residents must get a Florida license within 30 days of establishing residency. Some license holders can skip one or both tests, others must take both, and the knowledge exam is in English only. Lessons help you get used to local features like the busway gates and roundabouts.
