Learning to Drive in Homestead, at the South End of Miami-Dade
Homestead sits where Miami-Dade's suburbs meet farmland, between Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park. Driving here has its own mix: a historic downtown on Krome Avenue, Campbell Drive carrying trucks around it, US-1 with the South Dade TransitWay beside it, the Redland's farm roads to the northwest, and the southern end of Florida's Turnpike next door in Florida City.
PalmWay Driving School teaches one-on-one, 60-minute behind-the-wheel lessons with pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Homestead. Below you will find the streets you will practice on, the closest road test office, every package price, and the steps to a Florida license for teens, adults, nervous drivers and people new to Florida.
How Driving Lessons Work in Homestead
There is no PalmWay office or classroom in Homestead, and you do not need one. Your instructor comes to you, and you drive the instructor's car, so you do not need your own vehicle to start.
60 Minutes, One-on-One
A full hour behind the wheel with only you and your instructor in the car, each lesson building on the last.
Pick-Up and Drop-Off
From a home in southwest Homestead or Keys Gate, Homestead Senior High after classes, or your job downtown.
7 Days, 8 AM to 7 PM
Times that fit school, shifts and weekends. Book a package on this page or use our appointment page.
Licensed by FLHSMV

Who We Teach in Homestead
Teens with a Learner's License
Students from Homestead Senior High, South Dade Senior High and other local schools can start once they hold a Florida learner's license. Lessons work alongside the 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night, that a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older must certify.
Adults Getting a First License
At 18 or older you take the TLSAE course, the knowledge exam and the driving skills test, with no 12-month learner's license wait.
Nervous and Returning Drivers
We start on quiet residential streets and move to Campbell Drive, US-1 or the Turnpike only when you are ready.
New to Florida or Licensed Abroad
Depending on the country that issued your license, Florida may still require its knowledge exam and driving skills test. Lessons cover Florida right-of-way rules and the test maneuvers.
Homestead Street Names, Decoded
Homestead runs its own street grid on top of Miami-Dade's: Krome Avenue splits east from west, and Mowry Drive splits north from south. One road can carry two or three names, so knowing both helps with GPS directions, street signs and pick-up instructions.
| Road | Also called | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Krome Avenue | SW 177th Avenue; State Road 997 north of Campbell Drive | Downtown main street. It leads north into the Redland and south to the Florida City exam office. |
| Campbell Drive | NE and NW 8th Street; SW 312th Street; State Road 998 between Krome Avenue and US-1 | Truck bypass around downtown and the way to Turnpike Exit 2. |
| Mowry Drive | SW 320th Street | Where north and south street names switch. |
| Lucy Street / North Canal Drive | SE and SW 8th Street; SW 328th Street | Part of the city line with Florida City, around Krome Avenue. |
| Palm Drive | SE 24th Street; SW 344th Street | Homestead Senior High sits just north of it, and the TransitWay ends here. |
| Biscayne Drive | SW 288th Street | The city's north end, and Turnpike Exit 5, which serves Homestead Air Reserve Base. |
| Speedway Boulevard | SW 137th Avenue | Turnpike Exit 6, toward Homestead-Miami Speedway. |
| US-1 | South Dixie Highway; Homestead Boulevard | Main road to the Florida Keys, with the TransitWay bus lanes beside it. |
Homestead Roads You Will Practice On
Lessons follow a progression: light traffic first, then more speed, lanes and traffic as your control improves.
First Lessons: The Residential Grid
The older residential streets west of Krome Avenue between Campbell Drive and Mowry Drive, such as NW 3rd Avenue, suit first lessons: smooth braking, full stops, turns and right-of-way, plus the school zone at Homestead Middle School on NW 2nd Avenue.
Downtown Krome Avenue
Through the Homestead Historic Downtown District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, Krome Avenue could not be widened, so it stays a slower main street. Pedestrians around Losner Park and the bus stops along Krome Avenue make it good practice for scanning and yielding.
Campbell Drive
Because Krome Avenue could not be widened through the historic district, Campbell Drive became State Road 998, the truck bypass around downtown, with two lanes each way. You practice early lane choice, longer gaps behind trucks, and the east end, where you cross the TransitWay lanes and Flagler Avenue right before US-1.
US-1 and the TransitWay
The South Dade TransitWay runs beside US-1 down to SW 344th Street in Florida City. Since its rapid-transit upgrade opened in October 2025, many cross streets have railroad-style gate arms that stop cross traffic for express buses. We practice stopping behind the line and never stopping on the bus lanes.
Krome Avenue into the Redland
North of Campbell Drive, Krome Avenue becomes State Road 997 and runs past the Redland's fruit groves, plant nurseries and u-pick fields. Expect higher speeds and steady truck traffic.
Florida's Turnpike
For highway practice, the Homestead Extension is close: Exit 2 at Campbell Drive, Exit 5 at Biscayne Drive and Exit 6 at Speedway Boulevard. Tolls are all-electronic, so the skill to learn is merging at speed. The Turnpike ends at US-1 in Florida City.
Every route depends on your level. If US-1 or the Turnpike feels like too much, we stay on residential streets longer.
Homestead Traffic Patterns New Drivers Should Know
🚧 Gate arms on US-1 cross streets
Treat a lowered TransitWay gate like a railroad crossing: stop behind the line and never drive around it. After the October 2025 launch, residents reported long waits at some gates when turning onto US-1, and Miami-Dade began adjusting signal timing, so leave extra time.
🚛 Trucks on the bypass
Campbell Drive is the truck bypass around downtown, so expect trucks on it between Krome Avenue and US-1. Watch for wide right turns and stay out of their blind spots.
🏫 School zones
Homestead Senior High is on SE 12th Avenue just north of Palm Drive, and South Dade Senior High is on SW 167th Avenue just north of Biscayne Drive. When school zone lights flash, slow down and watch for buses and students on foot.
🏁 Race weekends
Homestead-Miami Speedway is reached from Turnpike Exits 2, 5 and 6, at Campbell Drive, Biscayne Drive and Speedway Boulevard. On big race weekends, such as NASCAR's Championship Weekend, expect heavy traffic on those exits and around the track.

Step by Step to a Florida License
Teens, 15 to 17
- 1.Finish the 6-hour DETS course online. Florida requires it for a teen's learner's license.
- 2.Pass the Class E knowledge exam: 50 questions, 40 correct to pass. Under 18, you can take it online through an approved provider with a Parent Proctoring Form.
- 3.At a driver license office, at 15 or older, pass the vision and hearing tests and bring proof of identity, Social Security number and residential address, plus the signed parental consent form.
- 4.Drive in daylight only for the first three months, then until 10 PM, always with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
- 5.Hold the learner's license 12 months or until 18 with no moving violation convictions, while you log 50 hours of driving, 10 at night, certified by a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older.
- 6.At 16 or older, pass the driving skills test.
Adults, 18 and Older
- 1.Never held a license in any state or country? Complete the 4-hour TLSAE course online.
- 2.Pass the vision and hearing tests and the Class E knowledge exam in person. Florida's online exam is for applicants under 18.

- 4.Book the driving skills test and bring a registered, insured car or use ours.
What the driving skills test checks
FLHSMV lists these maneuvers: three-point turn, approach of crossing, yield right-of-way, straight-in parking, parking on a grade, stop quickly, backing, obey stop signs, obey traffic signals, signal and turn, passing, stay in the proper lane, follow at a safe distance and proper posture.
Licensed in another country? Depending on the country, Florida may waive one or both exams or require both, and new residents must get a Florida license within 30 days of establishing residency. Exam details are on the FLHSMV Class E Knowledge Exam & Driving Skills Test page.

Can you pick up my teen at Homestead Senior High or South Dade Senior High?

When you are ready. Residential streets come first, then downtown Krome Avenue and Campbell Drive, then US-1 with its gate arms, and finally the Turnpike.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your starting point. Florida does not require a set number of driving school lessons, but teens must log 50 supervised hours, 10 at night. After the first lesson, your instructor can tell you what needs the most work.
I have a license from another country. What do I need?
It depends on the country: Florida may require the knowledge exam and the driving skills test. New residents must get a Florida license within 30 days of establishing residency.
Do I need my own car?
Not for lessons: you learn in the instructor's car. For the road test, bring your own registered, insured car or use our Car for Road Test ($90) or Car + Pick-up ($140) service.
