Tamiami is the part of west Miami-Dade between Florida's Turnpike and SW 137th Avenue, with SW 8th Street, the original Tamiami Trail, running straight through the middle. Learning to drive here means real suburban traffic from the first week: a wide US highway, busy avenues, school zones and toll highways on two sides.
PalmWay Driving School teaches one-on-one, 60-minute behind-the-wheel lessons across Tamiami. Your instructor picks you up at home, school or work and drops you off afterward, 7 days a week from 8 AM to 7 PM. Below: the local roads you will practice on, the nearest road test offices, the steps to a Florida license and every package price.
Tamiami at a Glance
Tamiami is an unincorporated census-designated place with 54,212 residents at the 2020 census, on about seven square miles of land. It is named after the Tamiami Trail, the Tampa-to-Miami highway opened in 1928, which runs through the district as SW 8th Street (US 41), the road known as Calle Ocho closer to downtown.
Borders
Roughly Florida's Turnpike on the east, the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) on the north, SW 137th Avenue on the west and Bird Road (here SW 42nd Street) on the south. Sweetwater and Westchester sit across the Turnpike; Kendale Lakes lies south of Bird Road.
ZIP Codes
33182 at the north end, 33184 on both sides of the Tamiami Trail, and 33175 for the larger southern half, from about SW 16th Street down to Bird Road.
Landmarks
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on SW 127th Avenue, HCA Florida Kendall Hospital on Bird Road and, just across the Turnpike, FIU's main campus and Dolphin Mall.
Not the airport: Miami Executive Airport (Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport until 2014) is not in Tamiami. It sits several miles south, near Kendall.
How Driving Lessons Work in Tamiami
Pick-up and Drop-off
At home, at school or at work anywhere in Tamiami, for every lesson.
60 Minutes, One-on-One
One instructor, one student and the full hour behind the wheel.
7 Days, 8 AM to 7 PM
After school, after work or on the weekend.
The Instructor's Car
You learn in the instructor's car, so you need no car of your own to start.
A first lesson usually starts on a quiet residential street near your home: mirrors, smooth braking, turns and stop signs. As those become automatic, the route moves to the avenues, then to SW 8th Street and, later, the highway ramps.
PalmWay Driving School holds Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218 from FLHSMV (see our license). To get started, choose a package in the price grid or call or text +1 (754) 354-5898.
Who We Teach in Tamiami
🎒 Teens with a Learner's License
Florida requires 50 certified hours of driving, 10 at night, before a teen's license. Lessons give that practice structure, up to the skills test maneuvers. Lessons for teenagers
🧑 Adults 18 and Older
Whether you are 18 or 58, we start from where you are, even if you have never driven. See adult driving lessons and our page for first-time drivers.
😌 Nervous and Returning Drivers
If traffic on SW 8th Street makes you tense, we build up on calm side streets first. Out of practice for years? See our pages for nervous drivers and refresher lessons.
🌎 New to Florida or a Foreign License
Lessons cover Florida rules, local road habits and the test maneuvers. Florida exams are now given in English only, so you can also practice following directions in English. Lessons for foreign license holders
Tamiami Roads You Will Practice On
Tamiami follows the Miami-Dade grid: numbered avenues run north and south, numbered streets run east and west, and residential Courts, Places, Terraces and Lanes fill the blocks in between. You can climb from easy to hard without leaving the neighborhood.
Residential Side Streets
The starting point. The streets around Tamiami Lakes Park, between SW 132nd and SW 134th Avenue, and around International Gardens Park, just west of SW 122nd Avenue, suit steering, stop signs, right-of-way and parking.
SW 127th and SW 122nd Avenues
The next step: avenues with traffic lights and turn lanes, good for choosing lanes early and timing left turns. Watch for school zone signs, for example near Greenglade Elementary on SW 127th Avenue.
Coral Way
Coral Way crosses the Turnpike as SW 24th Street and becomes SW 26th Street west of about SW 120th Avenue. It is a divided road that passes W.R. Thomas Middle and Zora Neale Hurston Elementary, so watch for school zone signs there.
SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail)
The main road: a divided US highway, mostly three lanes each way. The Tamiami Canal runs along its north edge, so the neighborhoods north of the Trail connect to it over canal bridges at SW 122nd, 127th, 132nd and 137th Avenues.
SW 137th Avenue
The western edge and a major north-south road; the Dolphin Expressway ends on it near NW 12th Street. Good for lane changes once you feel steady.
Bird Road and the Highways
Bird Road (SR 976) continues west of the Turnpike as SW 42nd Street. The Turnpike has exits at Bird Road (Exit 23) and SW 8th Street (Exit 25). It and the Dolphin Expressway are all-electronic toll roads: SunPass or toll-by-plate, no cash.
Tricky Spots and Habits We Practice
- ✅Left turns across SW 8th Street. Reading the signal, judging gaps across several lanes of oncoming traffic and finishing the turn in the correct lane.
- ✅Turning north off the Trail. At SW 122nd, 127th, 132nd and 137th Avenues the turn leads straight onto a short canal bridge, so you set your speed and lane before you turn.
- ✅School zones. Florida's standard school zone limit is 20 mph during posted times or while the lights flash, and a handheld phone in a school zone is against the law.
- ✅Merging onto the Turnpike. Building speed on the ramp at SW 8th Street or Bird Road, checking the mirror and blind spot, then keeping three to four seconds of following distance.
- ✅Rain showers. The Florida driver handbook says to turn on your headlights whenever your wipers are on, and wet roads need extra following distance.
Schools and School Zones Around Tamiami
No public high school sits inside Tamiami. These three public high schools are close by:
G. Holmes Braddock Senior High
3601 SW 147th Avenue, less than a mile west of SW 137th Avenue.
Miami Sunset Senior High
13125 SW 72nd Street, about 2 miles south of Bird Road.
Southwest Miami Senior High
8855 SW 50th Terrace in Olympia Heights, about 3 miles east of the Turnpike.
Inside Tamiami you will pass Belen Jesuit Preparatory School (private) on SW 127th Avenue, Paul W. Bell Middle and Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary near SW 118th Avenue, W.R. Thomas Middle on Coral Way, and elementary schools on SW 127th and SW 134th Avenues, SW 18th Terrace and SW 34th Street.
Teens can be picked up from school; give us the address when you book. New drivers can start away from arrival and dismissal times, then practice school zones on purpose until slowing down is a habit.

Step by Step to a Florida License
Teens Under 18
- 1. Complete the 6-hour DETS course online.
- 2. Pass the Class E knowledge exam: 50 questions, 40 correct to pass. Under 18, you can take it online at home with a parent as proctor.
- 3. At a driver license office, pass the vision and hearing test and get your learner's license (age 15 or older, with a parental consent form).
- 4. Drive in daylight only for the first three months, then until 10 PM, always with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
- 5. Hold the learner's license 12 months or until 18, with no moving violation convictions, and complete 50 supervised hours, 10 at night.
- 6. At 16 or older, pass the driving skills test. Licensed 16-year-olds may drive 6 AM to 11 PM, and 17-year-olds 5 AM to 1 AM, unless driving to or from work or with a licensed driver 21 or older.
Adults 18 and Older
- 1. Complete the 4-hour TLSAE course online.
- 2. Take the knowledge exam in person (online testing is only for applicants under 18) plus the vision and hearing test.
- 3. Get your learner's license and practice with lessons and a licensed driver 21 or older.
- 4. Pass the driving skills test. Adults have no 12-month waiting period.
Moving to Florida With a License
New residents must get a Florida license within 30 days. A valid license from another U.S. state, Canada, France, South Korea or Taiwan waives the knowledge and skills exams (Germany: skills exam only), but not the vision test; other foreign licenses mean taking both exams. With a license from any country in hand, you skip TLSAE.
The driving skills test includes a three-point turn in a 20 to 40 foot space, straight-in parking, a quick stop, backing up 50 feet without using the mirror or camera, stop signs, signals and turns, right-of-way, lane position and following distance. We practice each one before test day.
What to Bring to Lessons and to the Test
🎒 To Every Lesson
- ✔️Your learner's license or driver license (the physical card)
- ✔️Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive
- ✔️Comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals
📋 To the Road Test
- ✔️Your learner's license
- ✔️Proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number and two proofs of your Florida address
- ✔️Under 18: the signed Certification of Minor Driving Experience and the parental consent form
- ✔️A car with a valid plate, registration and insurance that passes the examiner's inspection, or our car through the road test service
