Pinecrest is a village of about 7.5 square miles, incorporated in 1996. It sits just south of South Miami, with Red Road (SW 57th Avenue) on the east, Howard Drive (SW 136th Street) on the south and Pinecrest Parkway (US-1) on the west. Much of it was built in the 1950s and 1960s as ranch-style homes on one-acre lots, so the interior is quiet and shaded by trees. Heavy traffic gathers on the edges, along the US-1 business strip and around Dadeland by Kendall Drive, plus the school rush around Miami Palmetto Senior High.

That layout works well for a new driver. PalmWay Driving School picks you up at home, school or work in Pinecrest, starts you on calm residential streets and builds up to US-1 and the expressway ramps near Dadeland, one 60-minute, one-on-one lesson at a time.

How Driving Lessons Work in Pinecrest

🏠

Pick-up and drop-off

Your instructor meets you at your home, school or workplace in Pinecrest and brings you back after every lesson, so you never travel to us.

⏱️

60 minutes, one-on-one

Each lesson is a full hour behind the wheel of the instructor's car, with only you and the instructor on board.

📅

7 days a week

Lessons run from 8 AM to 7 PM every day, weekends included, so school and work schedules are easy to fit.

📜

Licensed by FLHSMV

PalmWay holds Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218. See our license.

We have no office in Pinecrest; our office is at 3325 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 401, Hollywood, FL 33021, and the instructor comes to you. When you book, tell us your pick-up address and what you already know how to do. Every lesson is planned around that level, not around a fixed script.

Who We Teach in Pinecrest

🎒

Teens with a learner's license

Students at Miami Palmetto Senior High and other local schools can be picked up at home or after class. We work on what the 50 practice hours at home do not always cover: US-1 traffic, lane changes and the test maneuvers. Teen lessons · DETS course

🧑‍💼

Adults getting a first license

If you are 18 or older and have never driven, we start from zero: seat and mirrors, smooth braking, then real traffic. Adult lessons · First-time drivers · TLSAE course

🌱

Nervous and returning drivers

Licensed but afraid of US-1 or the Palmetto Expressway? We begin on quiet village streets and add traffic only when you are ready. Nervous drivers · Refresher lessons

🌎

New to Florida or a foreign license

Experienced drivers from abroad often need Florida habits more than basic skills: right-of-way rules, school zones and how examiners score the test. Foreign license holders · Test preparation

Pinecrest Roads You Will Practice On

🛣️

Pinecrest Parkway (US-1)

The village's western edge and its main road. Shops and offices line it, so you learn to read driveways, turn lanes and sudden braking. Just west of it runs the South Dade TransitWay, the busway used by Metro Express buses.

🚇

Kendall Drive and Dadeland

On the village's northwest side, Kendall Drive (SW 88th Street) meets US-1 between the Dadeland North and Dadeland South Metrorail stations. The Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) begins at US-1 just south of Dadeland South.

🚦

Village roads, now 30 mph

Since August 2026 the limit is 30 mph on Ludlam Road (SW 67th Avenue), SW 72nd Avenue, SW 77th Avenue (Palmetto Road), SW 104th Street (Lombardy Street), Killian Drive (SW 112th Street), Montgomery Drive (SW 120th Street) and Chapman Field Drive (SW 124th Street).

🌳

Red Road and Old Cutler Road

Red Road runs along the east side past Pinecrest Gardens at 11000 Red Road, the former Parrot Jungle site. Old Cutler Road, a State Historic Highway since 1974, shares short stretches with Red Road and with SW 136th Street on the village edge.

🔄

Roundabouts

SW 72nd Avenue has a roundabout at SW 98th Street, and SW 136th Street has two more: at Ludlam Road and where Old Cutler Road splits off. Good places to learn yielding on entry and signaling on exit.

🏫

School streets

Miami Palmetto Senior High is on Montgomery Drive, and the piece of SW 118th Street beside it, from SW 74th to SW 77th Avenue, is co-named Panther Boulevard for the school mascot. Palmetto Middle is at 7351 SW 128th Street.

Traffic Situations New Drivers Find Hard Here

  • ✓Driveways on US-1. With shopping centers and offices along Pinecrest Parkway, cars slow down, turn in and pull out throughout the day. We practice scanning ahead, keeping a cushion and choosing the right lane early for a turn.
  • ✓Busway crossings. Miami-Dade has installed rail-style gate arms at key TransitWay intersections between Dadeland South and Florida City. If the arms are down or coming down, you stop and wait until they are fully raised and the lights are off, and you never stop on the busway itself.
  • ✓School traffic. Mornings and afternoons bring parents, buses and students on foot around Miami Palmetto Senior High, Palmetto Middle and Pinecrest Elementary at 10250 SW 57th Avenue. You learn to spot school-zone signs and hold the reduced speed during posted hours.
  • ✓Trees and hedges. Large lots and heavy landscaping can hide driveways, cross streets and people walking or cycling at the edge of the road. We train you to slow down at blind corners and look twice before turning.
  • ✓Dadeland merges. Kendall Drive near US-1 and the Palmetto Expressway ramps call for early lane choice and confident merging. We take this on only after you are steady on village roads.

Where First Lessons Happen

Start: residential side streets

The quiet residential streets off Ludlam Road and SW 77th Avenue (Palmetto Road) are where you learn steering, smooth stops, stop signs and lane position with little traffic around you.

Next: 30 mph village roads

Killian Drive, Montgomery Drive and SW 72nd Avenue add oncoming traffic, cyclists and the SW 98th Street roundabout while speeds stay low.

Then: US-1 and beyond

Once the basics are automatic, you move to Pinecrest Parkway, Kendall Drive and, for drivers who are ready, the Palmetto Expressway.

Step by Step to a Florida License

Teens under 18

  • 1.Complete the online DETS course (Driver Education Traffic Safety).
  • 2.At 15 or older, pass the vision and hearing test and the Class E knowledge exam: 50 questions, 40 correct to pass. Teens can take the exam online with a parent as proctor. A parent or guardian must sign the consent form in front of a driver license agent or a notary.
  • 3.Drive only in daylight for the first 3 months, then until 10 PM, always with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
  • 4.Hold the learner's license 12 months or until 18, whichever comes first, with no moving violation convictions (one is allowed if adjudication was withheld). A parent or guardian certifies 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night.
  • 5.Pass the driving skills test. At 16 you may drive from 6 AM to 11 PM, at 17 from 5 AM to 1 AM, unless driving to or from work or with a licensed driver 21 or older.

Adults 18 and older

  • 1.Complete the 4-hour TLSAE course online.
  • 2.Pass the vision and hearing test at a driver license office and the Class E knowledge exam in person, there or with an approved third-party provider. The online exam is only for applicants under 18.
  • 3.Bring original documents proving your identity, your Social Security number and your Florida address (two different proofs of address).
  • 4.Pass the driving skills test. Adults are not held to the 12-month learner period, so you test when you are ready.

Official rules for teens: FLHSMV graduated driver license laws.

What the Driving Skills Test Checks

Three-point turn

Turn the car around in a 20 to 40 foot space.

Straight-in parking

Centered in the space, with no part of the car in the traffic lane.

Quick stop

Make a quick, safe stop when the examiner tells you to.

Backing

Back up 50 feet slowly while looking to the rear, without using the rear-view mirror or camera.

Stop signs and signals

Full stop before the crosswalk or stop line, and signal for the last 100 feet before a turn.

Right-of-way

Let pedestrians cross, pull over and stop for emergency vehicles, and do not enter an intersection where you would block traffic.

Lane and distance

Keep to the proper lane and follow at a safe distance using the four-second rule.

Posture and grade

Both hands on the wheel with no elbow resting in the window, and correct parking uphill and downhill, with and without a curb.

In Pinecrest we rehearse backing and three-point turns on quiet residential streets, quick stops on a clear straight stretch, and signals, lane position and following distance on the 30 mph village roads. The SW 98th Street roundabout and the stop-sign corners off Ludlam Road are good drills for right-of-way. See also road test preparation.

What to Bring to Lessons and to the Test

Every lesson

  • ✓Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive
  • ✓Comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals

Test day

  • ✓Your learner's license
  • ✓For a first license: originals proving identity, Social Security number and two proofs of Florida address
  • ✓Under 18: the signed Certification of Minor Driving Experience
  • ✓A test vehicle with plate, registration and insurance, or our car for the road test

Full checklist: what to bring to a Florida road test.

Pinecrest Driving Lessons: Questions and Answers

Can I take the driving test in Pinecrest?

No. The office on US-1 at 11287 S Dixie Highway handles motor vehicle services only. The closest offices that give driving tests are Coral Reef, Midway Crossings and Miami Central, listed in the table above.

Where can the instructor pick me up?

At your home, school or workplace anywhere in Pinecrest, and you are dropped off at the end of the lesson. Give us the exact address and meeting point when you book.

My teen just got a learner's license. Can lessons run in the evening?

During the first 3 months a learner's license allows driving in daylight only, so choose a daytime slot. After that, driving is allowed until 10 PM, and our lessons run until 7 PM.

How many lessons will I need?

Florida does not require a set number of professional lessons. A complete beginner needs more time than someone brushing up. Start with a package that fits your experience and add lessons later; packages do not expire.

Can I use your car for the road test?

Yes. Car for Road Test is $90 and we meet you at the test location. Car + Pick-up is $140 and includes a pick-up from Pinecrest. You book the test appointment yourself.

I drive with a license from another country. Can you help?

Yes. New residents must get a Florida license within 30 days of establishing residency, and what you need depends on your case. Our lessons focus on Florida rules and the skills test. See lessons for foreign license holders.

Do lessons include the Palmetto Expressway?

When you are ready, yes. The expressway starts at US-1 by Dadeland, so merging practice is a short drive from most Pinecrest homes.

How do I pay?

By card at checkout, with Klarna or Afterpay at checkout, or by Zelle through our manager.
