Learning to Drive in South Miami
South Miami fits a lot of driving into a small city. Within a few blocks you go from quiet single-family streets to the angled meeting of Sunset Drive and US 1 by the Metrorail tracks, then into a two-lane downtown with paid curbside parking and people crossing on foot.
PalmWay Driving School gives one-on-one, 60-minute driving lessons across South Miami, with pick-up and drop-off for every lesson. This guide covers local roads, school zones, the nearest road test offices, prices and the steps to a Florida license.

Who We Teach in South Miami
Teens with a learner's license
Students at South Miami Senior High, Coral Gables Senior High and other nearby schools can start a lesson from home or right after class. We focus on what the skills test checks, plus full stops, following distance and scanning crosswalks. Teen driving lessons
Adults getting a first license
At 18 or older there is no 12-month learner's license wait before the driving skills test, so you can book the test as soon as you are ready. Adult driving lessons and first-time drivers
Nervous or returning drivers
Start on the single-family streets around SW 65th Avenue and move to Sunset Drive and US 1 only when you feel ready. Nervous drivers and refresher lessons
Foreign license or new to Florida
Since February 6, 2026, FLHSMV gives knowledge and skills exams in English only, with no interpreters. We practice Florida rules of the road and short English directions such as "turn left at the next light." Lessons for foreign license holders
South Miami Roads You Will Practice On
The city's edges are irregular: it runs from Red Road (SW 57th Avenue) west to about SW 69th Avenue, and from near Bird Road (SW 40th Street) south to Kendall Drive (SW 88th Street). Coral Gables is to the east, Pinecrest to the south, and unincorporated Glenvar Heights and Coral Terrace to the west and north.
US 1 (South Dixie Highway)
Cuts diagonally through the city beside the Metrorail tracks. Multi-lane traffic and turn arrows make it the road for lane changes, mirror checks and protected left turns.
Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street)
The main street. It passes City Hall at 6130 Sunset Drive on a brick-paved stretch, runs under the Metrorail tracks and meets US 1 at an angle. East of US 1 it is a two-lane downtown shopping street up to Red Road.
Red Road (SW 57th Avenue)
The eastern edge. Across it, in Coral Gables, is part of the University of Miami campus, so expect people walking and biking near campus.
SW 62nd Avenue, SW 64th Street, SW 80th Street
Signals and steady traffic, a step up from residential blocks. SW 62nd Avenue runs through the middle of the city to South Miami Hospital at US 1, and SW 80th Street crosses the south end of the city.
Ludlam Road (SW 67th Avenue)
On the west side, near the school zones of South Miami Middle and South Miami K-8 Center on SW 60th Street and Ludlam Elementary on SW 74th Street.
Miller Drive and Bird Road
Miller Drive (SW 56th Street) and Bird Road (SW 40th Street) carry east-west traffic on the north end, and both have interchanges with the Palmetto Expressway.
Expressways close to South Miami
The Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) runs west of the city with interchanges at Bird Road, Miller Drive, Sunset Drive and Kendall Drive. The Snapper Creek Expressway (SR 878) meets US 1 near Dadeland North station, just past the city's southwest corner, and its tolls are cashless: SunPass or toll-by-plate. Expressway lessons focus on merging, exiting and safe gaps at speed.
Spots New Drivers Find Tricky in South Miami
Sunset Drive at US 1
Sunset Drive passes under the Metrorail tracks and meets US 1 at an angle, beside the South Miami station, where buses and pedestrians gather. We approach from different directions until lane choice and signals feel routine.
Downtown curbside parking
Paid curbside spaces line Sunset Drive, SW 73rd Street, SW 74th Street and Dorn Avenue (SW 59th Avenue). Expect cars pulling out, doors opening and people stepping between parked cars: good practice for slow driving and parallel parking.
Near South Miami Hospital
The hospital sits at SW 62nd Avenue and US 1, so you may meet an ambulance with lights and siren. Florida law requires you to pull over to the closest edge of the road, clear of the intersection, and stop until it passes.
Trail crossings along the Metrorail
The Underline, a 10-mile linear park and trail under the Metrorail tracks, runs through South Miami, and some sections are still under construction. Cyclists and pedestrians cross side streets along the line, so check over your shoulder before right turns near the tracks.
Dadeland traffic to the southwest
Just past the city's southwest corner, US 1, Kendall Drive and the south end of the Palmetto Expressway carry heavy shopping and commuter traffic around Dadeland. We go there once you handle busy multi-lane roads.
School Zones, High Schools and Quiet Practice Streets
🏫 Schools to know
- ✓South Miami Middle (6750 SW 60th Street) and South Miami K-8 Center (6800 SW 60th Street) sit side by side near Ludlam Road, so mornings and afternoons bring drop-off lines and children crossing.
- ✓Ludlam Elementary, 6639 SW 74th Street.
- ✓South Miami Senior High, 6856 SW 53rd Street, just outside the city line in Glenvar Heights.
- ✓Coral Gables Senior High, 450 Bird Road, in Coral Gables. Which high school serves your address depends on Miami-Dade County Public Schools attendance zones, so check yours with the district.
Florida law prohibits handheld phone use in school zones and active work zones, and texting while driving is a primary offense, so an officer can stop you for it alone.
🌳 Where first lessons start
- 1.Single-family streets around SW 65th Avenue, north and south of Sunset Drive: light traffic and stop signs for steering, braking, turns and the three-point turn.
- 2.Cambridge Lawns, the small 1920s historic neighborhood just south of Miller Drive, for slow residential driving.
- 3.SW 62nd Avenue, SW 64th Street and SW 80th Street for signals and lane position.
- 4.Sunset Drive, US 1 and, later, the Palmetto Expressway.
Your pace sets the order: we move to busier roads when your control on quiet streets is steady.

Driving Lessons in South Miami: FAQ
Do you have an office or classroom in South Miami?
No. Our licensed location is in Dania Beach and our office is in Hollywood. In South Miami your instructor picks you up and drops you off for every lesson.
Which exam office is closest to South Miami for the driving test?
Miami Central (3721 NW 7th St) and Midway Crossings (7795 W Flagler St) are each about 7 miles by car from central South Miami, and Coral Reef (14653 SW 122nd Ave) is about 11 miles. The Coral Gables office does not give driving exams.
Can you pick me up at school or at work?
Yes: a house near Ludlam Road, an apartment downtown, South Miami Senior High after classes, South Miami Hospital after a shift or the University of Miami campus.
Is the Florida driving test given in English only?
Yes. Since February 6, 2026, FLHSMV gives all driver license knowledge and skills exams in English only, without interpreters or translated tests. If English is your second language, practice following spoken directions while you drive.
Can my teen take lessons in the evening?
Lessons run until 7 PM. Learners may drive only in daylight for the first three months, then until 10 PM, always with a licensed driver 21 or older. In December the sun sets in Miami before 6 PM, so new permit holders should book winter lessons earlier in the day.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on where you start. Teens need 50 supervised hours, 10 at night, so lessons work alongside practice with a parent. Adults can book one lesson first, then choose a package. Packages do not expire.
Do I need my own car for the road test?
The test vehicle needs valid registration and proof of insurance and must pass a basic inspection. You can also use our car: $90 (regular $110) meeting at the test location, or $140 (regular $170) with pick-up in South Miami.
