Learn to Drive in Fontainebleau, Starting at Your Front Door
Fontainebleau is the unincorporated community in west Miami-Dade that stretches west from the Palmetto Expressway, just south of the Dolphin Expressway, with Doral to the north, the city of Sweetwater to the west and Westchester to the south. The Census Bureau spells it Fountainebleau. It grew out of Fontainebleau Park, a 1970s development that took its name from the Miami Beach resort and was built as villages around two golf courses, both since closed and built over.
In just under four square miles, a new driver meets quiet residential blocks, a long divided boulevard, six lanes of W Flagler Street, a busy shopping center with a driver license office inside, and the Palmetto and Dolphin Expressways, the second one a cashless toll road.
PalmWay Driving School teaches one-on-one, 60-minute behind-the-wheel lessons here, with pick-up and drop-off at your home, school or job for every lesson. We hold Florida Commercial Driving School License #5218, issued by FLHSMV (see our license). We have no office or classroom in Fontainebleau: your instructor comes to you.
How Lessons Work in Fontainebleau
Pick-up and drop-off
Your instructor meets you at home, school or work anywhere in Fontainebleau, from the condo villages on Fontainebleau Boulevard to the workplaces on NW 107th Avenue, and brings you back after the hour.
60 minutes, one-on-one
A full hour behind the wheel with just you and your instructor, in the instructor's car. You do not need a vehicle of your own to start.
7 days, 8 AM to 7 PM
Lessons run every day. In the first three months of a learner's license you may drive only in daylight, so in winter pick a slot that ends before dark.
A plan for your level
Beginners start on calm residential streets. Experienced drivers can go straight to Flagler left turns, expressway merges or road test practice.
Book through the price grid on this page. Pay by card, Klarna or Afterpay at checkout, or by Zelle through our manager.
Who We Teach in Fontainebleau
🎒 Teens with a learner's license
Teens 15 and older with a learner's license. Florida requires 50 supervised hours before the license; lessons add what is hard to teach from the passenger seat, like scanning intersections and the test maneuvers. See teen driving lessons.
🎓 Adults getting a first license
Adults 18 and older starting from zero, including FIU students and people who work along NW 107th Avenue. See adult driving lessons and our guide for first-time drivers.
🌱 Nervous and returning drivers
If the Palmetto Expressway or the Dolphin interchange keeps you off the road, we build up to it from quiet streets at your pace. See nervous drivers and refresher lessons.
🌎 New to Florida or licensed abroad
Drivers who learned in another country and now need Florida rules, Florida signs and the Florida test format. See our page for drivers with a foreign license.
The Roads You Will Practice On
Fontainebleau is compact enough that one lesson can cover a residential street, a divided boulevard and a major arterial.
| Road | Where it runs | What you practice |
|---|---|---|
| Fontainebleau Boulevard | Divided boulevard from W Flagler Street near NW 88th Avenue, winding west through Fontainebleau Park and across NW 97th Avenue to NW 107th Avenue | Steady speed, lane position, turns at community entrances |
| W Flagler Street | The main east-west road through the district; six lanes from Galloway Road (NW 87th Avenue) east to the Palmetto | Left turns, lane choice, cars leaving shopping centers |
| NW 7th Street | East-west street north of Flagler, past Charles R. Hadley Elementary at NW 84th Avenue | School zone timing, neighborhood intersections |
| NW 87th, 97th and 107th Avenues | Divided north-south avenues; 87th (Galloway Road) and 107th (State Road 985, the Avenue of the Americas) reach the Dolphin Expressway | Signals, turn lanes, the school zone on 97th |
| SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) | US 41 along the southern edge, east of roughly SW 102nd Avenue | Crossing and turning onto a major highway |
| Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) | Eastern boundary, with exits at SW 8th Street, W Flagler Street and the Dolphin Expressway | Merging, exiting, reading signs early |
| Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) | Northern boundary, with exits at NW 87th Avenue and NW 107th Avenue, and the interchange with Florida's Turnpike a short drive west | Highway speed, toll gantries, interchange lanes |
Tricky Spots New Drivers Meet in Fontainebleau
Dolphin and Palmetto interchange
The interchange was rebuilt between 2009 and 2016 to ease severe congestion, and its ramps split and merge in quick succession. Northbound on the Palmetto, the W Flagler Street exit shares a ramp with the exit for NW 72nd Avenue (Milam Dairy Road), so read the overhead signs early.
Cashless tolls on SR 836
The Dolphin Expressway bills tolls by SunPass or by plate, never cash. Its Fontainebleau toll gantry stands between the NW 107th and NW 87th Avenue exits, and some ramps are tolled too.
Midway Crossings lots
The former Mall of the Americas, renamed Midway Crossings in 2022, shares its property with Costco, The Home Depot and Aldi, and the driver license office is inside. Expect shoppers on foot and cars backing out.
Left turns on W Flagler
East of Galloway Road, Flagler carries three lanes each way past shopping centers and businesses. Judging a gap across three oncoming lanes while cars pull out of driveways takes practice.
NW 107th Avenue at SR 836
State Road 985 ends at the Dolphin Expressway just south of Miami International Mall in Doral. Heavy turning traffic around the ramps means choosing your lane a block or two ahead.
Summer downpours
The Florida driver handbook says to turn on your headlights whenever your wipers are on, slow down and leave more following distance, because wet roads lengthen stopping distances.
Quiet Streets and School Zones
🌴 Where first lessons start
Many condo and townhome villages in Fontainebleau sit on private community streets, so first lessons move to public residential blocks.
A good example is the grid south of W Flagler Street between about SW 79th and SW 87th Avenues: SW 2nd, SW 4th and SW 5th Streets crossed by SW 82nd and SW 84th Avenues. Light traffic leaves room to practice stopping, turning, signaling and three-point turns before moving up to Fontainebleau Boulevard and Flagler. Seminole Elementary sits at the east end of this grid, so mind its school zone.
🏫 School zones to know
- 📍E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary (330 NW 97th Ave) and Ruben Dario Middle (350 NW 97th Ave), side by side a few blocks north of Flagler.
- 📍Charles R. Hadley Elementary (8400 NW 7th St).
- 📍Seminole Elementary (121 SW 78th Pl), south of Flagler near the Palmetto.
- 📍Fontainebleau has no public high school of its own. Most local teens attend Miami Coral Park Senior High (8865 SW 16th St), across the Tamiami Trail in Westchester, so crossing US 41 becomes part of the school run.
Keep to the school zone limit during the posted times or while the lights flash, and never use a handheld phone in a school zone.

Taking the Road Test Near Fontainebleau
Only some of Miami-Dade's FLHSMV offices give driving exams, and only by appointment. The Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, Miami Beach and justice center offices do not. These are the closest that do:
| Office | Address | From central Fontainebleau | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midway Crossings (Space 82C) | 7795 W Flagler St, Miami, FL 33144 | About 2 miles, on the district's eastern edge at the Palmetto | Midway Crossings |
| Miami Central | 3721 NW 7th St, Miami, FL 33126 | About 6 to 7 miles east | Miami Central |
| Hialeah Gardens | 11093 NW 138th St, Hialeah Gardens, FL 33018 | About 11 to 12 miles north | Hialeah Gardens |
Driving distances from the middle of Fontainebleau; yours depends on your address.
🚗 Car for Road Test: $90 (regular $110)
Take the driving skills test in our car. We meet you at the test location.
🚙 Car + Pick-up: $140 (regular $170)
We pick you up and you take the test in our car.
You book the test appointment with FLHSMV yourself; our FLHSMV appointment guide explains which appointment to choose. Then send us the office, date and time so we can confirm availability. Midway Crossings is listed on our car for road test page; for Miami Central or Hialeah Gardens, just ask. Details are in our road test guide.
The examiner scores the maneuvers in the Florida driver handbook, including a three-point turn, straight-in parking, a quick stop, backing up 50 feet while looking to the rear, stop signs, signals, right-of-way, lane position and three to four seconds of following distance. Our driving test preparation lessons drill each one.

Fontainebleau Driving Lessons: Questions and Answers
Do you have an office or classroom in Fontainebleau?
No. Our licensed location is in Dania Beach and our office is at 3325 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 401, Hollywood. In Fontainebleau, the instructor picks you up for every lesson, and all lessons are behind the wheel.
Which exam office is closest to Fontainebleau?
Midway Crossings, at 7795 W Flagler St next to the Palmetto Expressway, about 2 miles from the middle of the district. Miami Central and Hialeah Gardens also give driving exams. All tests are by appointment through FLHSMV.
Can you pick me up at work or at FIU's Engineering Center?
Yes. We pick up from any home, school or workplace in Fontainebleau, including businesses on NW 107th Avenue and the FIU Engineering Center at 10555 W Flagler Street.
My teen has a learner's license. How many lessons do we need?
It depends on how much your teen already drives with you. Four to six lessons usually leave room for quiet-street basics, Flagler traffic and the test maneuvers, and packages do not expire.
I drove for years in another country. Do I still take the road test?
In most cases, yes. Florida waives the knowledge and skills exams only for licenses from other U.S. states and territories, the U.S. military, Canada, France, Germany (skills test only), Taiwan and South Korea. Everyone takes the vision test. TLSAE is needed only if you never held a license anywhere or do not have it with you.
Will I have to drive on the Palmetto or the Dolphin Expressway?
Only when you are ready. Beginners start on residential streets, then move to Fontainebleau Boulevard and Flagler. Expressway practice comes later for students who want it.
